How to tell difference between 47 and 48re?

One is electronic the other runs off of fluid pressure. may be wrong just a shot in the dark!

For a 2003. I know about the vin number and engine hp. Does the 2003 48re have a tv motor?

03-04 1/2 are tricky. They do not have electronic throttle valve, but internally are identical to a 48re. Outside, the only way to tell is by the prndl switch. The 03 and on will have a sensor the bolts onto a sleeve that threads into the trans.

So they(2003 47re) will have the added clutches over the earlier model 47re's?

Yes, as well as 6 pinion planatarys etc!! The best ones to find IMO, since you dont need a tcm to run the throttle valve on them, but have all the strong parts inside

So basically I need a clutch kit for a 48re? Why do they even call it a 47re? becuase of the case?

Yes, if from Suncoast you will need a 48 kit. I cant say from other companies.

Lol not as much as it trying to build a 48 with a 47 kit!! I had to learn the hard way!!

47RE has a different color pump. Pump is unpainted on the 47RE, and the 48RE have a black coating on them IIRC.

Also the 48RE has a plastic ring on the reaction shaft support. I was thinking the pans were unpainted on the 48RE and painted on the 47's. Early 47RE had the bolt in prndl switch.

Came out of a 250hp truck. unpainted pan. can't remember much more. here is a pic, if you can tell anything?

I thought the 250HP were the 47RE, but not for sure. I was thinking the 48RE got the 5:1 ratio second gear lever.

I think the sure fire is see if there is a ring on the reaction shaft support. It appears to have the black pump though.

Thats the thing, 250hp are supposed to be 47re, no doubt. As well as the 8th vin bumber is a 6. I dont have the trans with me right now to check the other things though.

I got an early 03 250hp truck and the vin says its a 47re. I feel your pain lol. I was on the look out for a used built tranny for mine but some sensors are different from the 02 to the 03 and you can't find a built 03 47re trans used. On the converter thing I think they all swap but there's one with a seal that's different from the other.

Dodge did not call it a 48 untill it had electric throttle controll, bit otherwise the transmissions in any common rail truck are all the same inside.

How do you know this is the case?

My 03 had a 47RE in it. I had to upgrade to the steel 6 pinion planetary. It didn't have the 5:1 lever in it stock either.

????

Possibly early 03's got leftover parts? The 47 I built and have in my truck is all 48 inside, came out of a 03, even had a sticker still on the case dated 03.
