Loading big single on Dyno

Hey Guy's I'm gonna be running 480/96/1.15 and talked to Tyler kipp and he said he couldn't get his loaded hard enough to get past 800hp but he is also couple thousand feet over sea level , I'm around 4-700 and was curious what to expect ? I am also eligible for DPC and was curious on some techniques y'all have picked up along the way on lighting big singles .... oh and pretty key piece of information is it's a 12V

It will be extremely hard for you to be competitive in the DPC with a massive single on a small displacement mechinal injected truck. The only feasible way to even do Ok would be lots of nitrous, a spool jet and then a bigger hit under power. The loosest Convertor on the planet, Phil at DPC calls it the slut. You need a great cam good head work for velocity to help spool up. Try a turbine diverter maybe have heard mixed reviews on them. Not much can be done with singles on a dyno. I have a large single on a Common Rail, I just use my brakes quickly to get the load just right then let it rip. Your best option is compounds especially with static timing, not the answer you want but might be worth it. I had a Ppumed 24v with a single s480, dynoed like crap, drove on the street like crap, sled pulled like crap, fuel mileage crap, only good thing it did was drain nitrous bottles and roast converters.

Yea a spool jet and loose converter was in the plan , and the head is ported and has a runner

Only other thing I used and worked for me was a full manual valve body and keeping the rpm high

Simpson5.9 04-11-2017 09:56 AM

Yea I have a full manual as well , left my 62/75 and went to big single so I didn't have to mess with tuning them and price

Personally, I would try to see if you could find a different turbine and exhaust housing for that 80 because it's going to be rough with the 1.15. I'm up here at 5600ft (Denver area) with a big single on a 12v. 3200 stall converter, a manual valve body and lots of RPM. Cam is mild it's only a 181/210. In my opinion the trans setup made the most difference. Without the converter and MVB no way would the charger light from the line or drive decent. You'd be dragging brakes till you're blue in the face haha, I've tried it! Ps I was there cracking open a bottle of nitrous on that s480 setup Kipp had. Made good power with nitrous though that's for sure.

I have the same cam and yea kipp is responsible for all my parts lol

Ya I wouldn't suggest braking long. It's an art that was shown to me by some good guys. I'd keep the 1.1 if you are spraying it, it will make more peak power

Simpson5.9 04-11-2017 11:48 AM

It's getting as much spray as it can take , I'm only spraying till it cleans up , I have (2) 40mm gates and a cut and coated marine style Pistons

Well it works for Tyler so should do the same

Simpson5.9 04-11-2017 01:02 PM

Yea I was gonna ask him but didn't feel like bothering him since he is at work and I'm trying to leave him be and not ask every other hour if my pump is ready lol

Loading big single on Dyno

Not a 480, but I'll tell you right now a 13mm pump will be your best friend when trying to lite a big single, it made my truck fun again.

I run a steel 200/220, a 3000rpm stall converter, 5x.020 injectors with 28* timing and it's a blast to drive.

Truck has 13mm and 5x.022 and will be around 21* with nitrous adding more timing

I would get in touch with PDD. They have mechanical injection down.

TTR 21 04-12-2017 11:18 AM

Big singles in general do not like to load well on a dyno compared to compounds. You aren't going to be running fuel only on a dyno in competition to make the most power so nitrous will do the trick. Every truck is a little different but I start around 90mph, once shes almost fully lit I hit the button and let her eat.

I was also a rookie back then and started my dyno pull at 50mph haha. 90mph is much happier and works perfect now.

But yes you are a ghetto fog queen for sure. We killed it that year!

Simpson5.9 04-12-2017 04:13 PM

So how "low" do you reccomend loading ? 22-2500?

TTR 21 04-12-2017 04:23 PM

you will have to play with it on the dyno to see what works best for your setup. ATS' dyno will also bring most trucks to their knees so the higher the RPM the better. That dyno loads hard as F***!!!!

ikeG 04-17-2017 07:16 AM

I dyno tuned a S480 single dmax setup last week. Started the pull at 2200rpm in 5th gear and was able to get great consistent runs, even within 2hp & 3 lb-ft of each other. The problem is the charger would light so late in the run that the torque is not accurate because it was already past peak torque rpm. Basicallyis on the down swing of the torque curve by the time it lights. I wasn't worried about it at the time, just was looking for repeatability to tune. Horsepower was right on par with what it's capable of. I'm just wandering how to go about it. I didn't try to ride brakes or anything. Maybe start the run @ 1500 rpm and ease into it?

Simpson5.9 04-18-2017 10:26 AM

So load it that low and hit nitrous around 22-2400 of boost is there
