NP271 Input shaft Dodge/Ford

Any difference between the two? From the interweb search it looks like the pocket bearing is just positioned further back in the dodge input shaft. I called to order a dodge 23 spline input and the guy swears up and down it won't fit and they have tried it for a local diesel shop and it will not work Ford-Dodge or Dodge-Ford.

Trying to get my hands on a 23 Dodge shaft locally to see.

I'm curious as well, I'm planning to do the fat 47RE output with the dodge spline Tcase input, and put it in a Ford 273.

To my knowledge, the guys I asked (you might be able to find my thread?) claimed the shafts are different lengths for each manufacturer, and have to be shimmer accordingly.

NP273 Transfer Case GM Kodiak, Dodge and Ford rebuilt replacements and Parts

This is the list I referenced. I didn't see any other structure changes, but it's been a while since I looked. I got the link from my conversion spreadsheet.

I have seen trucks with this style swap, so it can be done, the important aspect in a transfer case is to have proper bearing preload when the case is assembled, I would prolly start by measuring thickness between bearing surfaces. From ford input to dodge.

In my quick search, I’m reading that they can be swapped but a different seal is needed. Transfer Case Express are good people to talk to. My 271 has the Ford driveshaft flange on the rear and bolts up to the NV4500. It was built by them. Midwest Transmission or Zbag.com may be able to help you too.

They are all ball roller bearings, so they don't have any preload like a tapered roller.

I should have a 23 spline input tomorrow and let you know if it fits.

It is a direct swap, along with seal as mentioned. I put a 271F behind a 48RE in my conversion truck

I put dodge 271 (auto) behind a zf6 and it was a direct swap of inputs. If that helps any.

Just to confirm, I got my hands on a 23 spline input and it's a direct fit other than the placement of the pocket bearing in the input shaft. The Ford version bearing isn't as deep as the Dodge version bearing. Everything else measures and fits the same.

Could you snap pics of the pocket bearing deal?

Working on this swap today. Snap rings are the devil.

Tobin, did you just drive the plug and bearing to the proper depth for the F transfer case?
