Fair price for paint?

I've got a 2001 3500 regular cab flatbed that I just bought from Tennessee....the truck overall is in good condition but the paint is

The paint feels like 80 grit sandpaper...not sure how that happens but the truck needs a paint job!

What is a fair price to pay to have the cab sanded and painted with a quality paint?

Last year I had a regular cab for ranger painted black for my company....for 6-7 years it had the company decals all over the truck and when I brought it to the shop to get painted I had removed the decals. Once they sanded/painted the truck....you could still see the outline of the decals! NOT HAPPY. fortunately for this truck I was planning on having new vinyl decals which hid mostly the old decal outline. So this shop didn't do a bang up job on sanding or painting. You can scratch the paint with your finger nail and leave a permanent mark. I had paid for their upper end paint job which was $1,200

I don't want a ferrari paint job as it's just a work truck, but I do want to have a paint job that is durable.

What have you all paid for to have your truck painted?

Would a body shop frown upon me doing some of the prep with sanding to save money? I can sand...I can't paint LOL

Only reference I have is from a guy that does top end paint on street rods, and I know one of them a '41 Willys was over $40k! Car was featured in PPG's booth in Louisville one yr though, and won best paint and quite a few shows. I'd say $1200 was not a high end paint job, venture a guess $1200 wouldn't cover the labor for the prep, let alone the paint and finish work. Not to mention the material costs, not all paint is the same cost by a very wide margin.

I've only ever done my own stuff but this shops upper end paint job for 1200 should speaks for itself, and the results you are unhappy with also speaks. You get what you pay for when it comes to paint jobs, if your looking to get that 2nd gen painted assuming it needs 0 bodywork just scuffed and shot for a quality job id say your looking at 3500 plus

Actually found a picture of it in the ppg booth! The second picture also has the owner of the orange cars wife's green '40 Ford convertible. He also built the Willys to its right, which was on the cover of Summitt racing catalog at one point.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c80f0667ba.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2040895e1f.jpg

Minimum $8k for a good paint job.

Dang 8K for just painting a cab? Keep in mind I don't need it to look like glass when it's done. Just a paint job that is worthy of routine washing and waxing and a clear coat that can withstand a clay bar if needed occasionally.

I asked a good friend what he’d charge me to paint my truck @ 15 years ago. He paints show cars like the one Jay mentioned. I told him I just wanted a good paint job, not a show car. If I removed all the bumpers, mirrors, trim, etc. and took it to him, he said it would be $7K. That was a “good buddy deal” 15 years ago.....

Yeah, the guy I know is also a 2nd gen guy. I bought the hide-n-side bed kit from him actually. So he knows I'll want to do paint at some point, and I've already told him I'm not even going to waste his time with an estimate, I can't afford his time. Would love to have him paint something, but I haven't won the lottery!

One of my customers is having his 72 travelall currently being painted. And it is 10k. Granted that’s a suburban like vehicle. So I say 6-8 is realistic

I have a kid with a shop at his house, he's done 2 trucks for me for 2500. and turned out pretty solid.

If you can get it to 32068 Fl, I'll hook Y'all up with him.

Pull all the trim, sand it down and paint it outside on a calm day. It's a dodge

Jason, I have a friend about an hour and a half north of your “kid” that needs some body work and/or a cab swap on a ‘98 4x4 Club Cab. Think he’d be interested?

jasonc 05-30-2021 06:15 AM

I don't think he'd be interested in doing a cab swap, he's a turn an burn repaint shop, light body work. He stays busy all the time because his prices and does pretty decent work.

But I'd still call him anyway and see.

Sounds like the $1200 paint job was just a base coat, no clear.

$4,000-$6,500 would seem reasonable for a good paint job. Granted I have never paid for a paint job, always done my own.
A decent paint is not cheap. Nor are the materials, thinners, and activators. If you think you will save money by doing the body work yourself, just be ready to look at missed spots and dings you didn't fill once the color is on.

You can ask for a water base paint which should drop the price some. Urethanes are quite a bit more. I painted my 05 few years ago, used PPG's "Shop Line" paint and clear. I spent over $2,500 in materials only. Can only imagine what automotive paint cost now.
