BD 3.0 sb turbo insight

What's everyone's opinion on the BD 3.0 smooth bore turbo? Cant seem to find hardly any information with google. All I can find Is the.specs on there website. Anyone ever run one? Any videos? I'm have my 3.0 being built for me. But a buddy is looking at them sence they seem fairly cheap to a custom built one..

The only video I have seen is on the engine dyno when the smooth bore portion extends out and allows air in behind it. I would assume the latest covers are actally set in place as they should be.
I don't know what kind of power they make?

link to said video? sounds like its not a legal type of SB charger

I don't know if the video is available online. I saw it on the engine owner's phone.

No one would ever see the bore slide out with an air shutoff on the turbo. You also cannot tell that the bore moves by just looking at the cover.

Yes it would be illegal because the air would no longer be traveling through the 3.0 bore.

"The turbocharger is smooth faced intake housing, limited to a 3.0” inlet, (no map ring) with all air entering through the 3.0” opening. Intake wheel must protrude 1/8th inch inside of opening."

spoke with the guys at BD about this last week the turbo is currently being redesigned to meet all ppl rules it will be based of the s476 platform with a custom cover and wheel but the cover will not move like the charger they had released prior. I sent tanner the 2017 ppl rule and he said the new design will be much different then before and will meet rules. I have one on order so we will see how it performs when it comes in. they estimated power to be in the 1200-1300 capable range

^^^^ well that's good news to hear..

Last year the turbo was just under $2k retail and I see it is now priced at $2500. Is the $2500 number going to be the going rate for the redesigned version, or should buyers expect another price increase?

Does anyone have any dyno numbers on this turbo?

If its the charger I'm thinking of that extends out its illegal/cheating and I think its an item thats looked for at tech.

The numbers were not on par with most 60/80/47 frame chargers from other builders were, but respectable for a cheap s400...that was until people figured out what was actually occurring.

I talked to one of there R&D guys, Christian last week and he said the new revised turbo will meet ppl rules and no more moving cover. They expect them to be done mid march but they don't have a price set in stone yet. My guess is probably around what there last one was, so 2500ish. If I find out anymore I'll be sure to let you guys know. Overall I think they are moving in the right direction by making something that's ppl class legal and yet affordable

Nice of them to move that direction. But I'd imagine they will need to get on the drawing board a bit more if they want to keep up with the top chargers out there.

Any more info on these? I'm seeing them listed at $1725... It's a tempting price but why are they half the cost of everyone else?
