My 2014 3500 is at a dealer getting some service and they tell me the rear diff has a bunch of water in it. They pulled it apart to inspect and said the pass side bearing spun so I need a new axle housing, and then told me it's $5500 just for the part plus install. And they're on backorder.

That price just seems insane to me for such a simple part. What are my options, aftermarket or used? And is the axle housing really not able to be rebuilt or machined to accept a new bearing?

i would do used in a heartbeat. If you are bent on repairing, someone should be able to spray weld and line bore or re-machine.

I'd find a junkyard one.

You could look at it and see if the spun bearing did much damage, but the correct way to fix it would likely be to drill the plug welds, pull the tube off, bore it larger, and throw a sleeve on it.

Look up Quality used parts. Ben Shadday/ Done Right Diesel is now offering used parts, specializing in fourth gens. You can get a good used axle assembly for much less than the quote price.

I know this thread is from April, but Mark Nixon had an axle housing laying around. No guts in it, and IIRC was a dually
