Hey guys I'm currently rebuilding a first gen and there is a junkyard second gen complete but not running and I have the opportunity to buy the transmission, adapter plate, pedals, driveshafts the whole nine yards minus transfer case for 500 bucks . The truck has 500000 but it's supposedly not the original transmission either way I would count on it having 300000 k . Wanted to hear some opinions from people that have done the swap and if it's a bad deal or not

Thanks in advance guys

The good news is I probably won't be snapping it in half with my ve any time soon . Maybe chuck some fresh synchros in there and run it ?

Sounds like a plan .I'll probably pay for it this weekend and yank it out when I got time . I'll post some pictures when I get a hold of it

Got er pulled gentleman . Phone died before I could get a picture of the transmission but here's what I had to work with.Took longer than I had hoped . Stripped bolt on the crossmember and no cutting torch so I had to bend it as far out of the way as I could . Looks like it's been opened up before . Red rtv all over the place so I'll crack to top cover next weekend and see what I'm dealing with

Here it is everyone . Can't say I'm much of a transmission expert so I took some pictures of the inside . 1 through 4 look okay 5th is missing a tooth.. yikes . Took some pictures of the synchros. I thought nv's had some sort of kevlar composite type of deal . These appear to be brass so possibly rebuilt ? I also noticed the aluminum tail housing has got all kinds of hairline cracks all over the place so that's probably gonna need to be changed along with 5th .

Some views of 5th gear and a look at the counter shaft from the PTO cover .I've noticed some of the gears on the main shaft have some play on them enough that you can feel and see them move. Is that normal or should they be fairly tight ? Also some more of the cracks on the tail housing . Whattya guys think chuck in a new fifth gear and tail housing and use it ? Or take it right apart and rebuild it ?

If that tooth is laying there in the bottom, something else probably caused it.
There's no way I'd try to band aid it, it needs to be totally torn down and checked to see what may have went through the gears.

Mark.

Found the missing piece of gear stuck to the magnet on the PTO cover . Visibly it doesn't look like it ended up going between any other gears . The amount of metal shavings seems normal also . I'll have to find a service manual and check what I can with the dial indicator to get an idea of what shape it's really in
