2008 F350 Cummins swap - 03 CR and Allison 1000

Just started tearing the truck apart yesterday for this swap. I know I'll have some questions before I'm through so I'll do a build thread here.

Truck we're starting with is a 2008 F350 6.4l powerstroke. The turbo seals were leaking on it and using oil so rather than throwing money at it we figured cummins was the way to go.

Picked up a package deal on a 2003 Cummins commonrail with an Allison 1000 transmission and pretty much everything we need to do the swap. It was built with the intention of putting it in an 06 Ford but the project never got done.

That will be a sharp combination! Both the truck and the engine look really good. What's been done to the engine performance wise? What sizes are the turbos?

The engine was built from the stock short block. It apparently had 50k on it so the bottom end was not redone.

From there up here are some of the specs;
ARP head studs
110 lbs valve springs
new valve seats
coolant bypass
90hp ddp injectors
Glacier Diesel intake plate
Banks intake horn
T3 exhaust manifold
62/65/13 over S475 compound turbos
PPE dual fueler
Fluidampr

Will have Airdog 200 gph pump

Transmission was redone as well with PPE stage 5 kit and billet input/output shafts. New torque coverter setup for the application.

Nice combo. What are you using to control the transmission? Most peoples dream truck.

Thanks.

Will be using a destroked controller for the allison 5 speed.
Trans won't hold if you plan on working it.

Will be a sweet setup, good luck.
With the stage 5 kit the trans is rated at 1000 hp and I won't be anywhere near that so I think it will work out ok. Won't be drag racing or abusing this truck. Hardest work it will see is towing.

If I was starting from scratch to put parts together I probably would have used the Ford trans but that doesnt make sense at this stage.

I know someone with an Allison swapped into a 2nd gen. Runs low 11's and I haven't heard of him having any problems.

Can you imagine that, Allison behind a 800hp cummins mechanical motor and not defueling on the shifts yet holding together, would be my dream build..

77fummins, good luck on the build. will be a nice setup when complete.

Ha, you'd be who i was referring to.

There are 100s of Freightliner UPS trucks across the country that run the 6.7 Cummins/Allison 6 spd combo every day. They work very well together.

Chris Watson had a Ford with cr Cummins and allison in it they used for work every day. Can't remember what combo they had of years, but he might be able to help if he's around kn here these days

Better stick to towing then. If you push that 475 for all it's worth that trans will die. I don't care what bs hp claim PPE makes on that kit. Not being an azz, just warning you.

I see your running an gmc, can i ask what power level you had failure with the Allison and what kept failing on you? What did you have done to the trans? not looking for a heated debate just for some info. It took 4 times to get mine to hold. First time was clutches, then i snapped 3 p2 planets. after i went with the billet p2 its been solid for 85+ passes. clutches were fine each time i changed the p2 (around 30-45 passes) the original p2 went around 80 passes also. i beat the crap out of this thing and its still going. Truck is a p24 with seths pump 550cc 7x12 injectors 362 over a 478 with 110 housing. I launch 25psi and push gorend R stall to 3000rpm and let it fly lock second and shift locked with no defuel. sorry if i derailed the build thread but i think the original poster will be very happy with this setup after its dialed in.

There’s a lot that suppliers don’t tell the end builder
Took me a couple rebuilds on mine to find out why pressure was dropping with converterlocked so much, fixed that and now 6 years of sled pulling the only things I broke was planets and inputs, mainly because I didn’t have the coin to do it the first time. Every time I check the clutches they still look perfect

U won’t regret the Allison once the kinks are worked out

What controller do you use for the allison?

One of them is CA conversions on my 09: daily driver 520hp
- Jason @ transmission tuner for the puller: 3.0 smoothbore
- Destroked which they use pcs stuff on 05: compounds, tow rig

All the info/input certainly helps. I've never got too far into transmissions myself and certainly know very little about anything off a GM truck.

I'm under 600hp, toasted a set of c3 clutches BAD and the c2 wasn't much better. The c2 also had too many frictions, I dropped that down, and am running a different c3 setup now. NOT Altos (which is what the PPE kit consists of). The stage 5 runs 7 frictions, and is set up with thin steels to make clearance. This does not handle heat very well, and the c3 pack being over worked makes it hard to get one to last.

No defuel is what killed your p2 planet. The 3-4 shift needs to be smooth on an Allison (all the shifts, really), but after a certain power level it needs billet parts anyway. And stock gm programming will shift when locked, this is also another reason for defueled shifts.
