Turbine and AR sizing for the Primary?!?!?!?!!

Alright guys, wanting to upgrade to compounds and trying to plan for that right primary that fits my needs. Been searching and trying to do the right word search and not coming up with the answers.

I have an ‘06 with:
sxe 63/68/.83 wastegated T4 divided with a Stainless Diesel Spring gate and their wastegate spacer.
100hp exergy sticks
Motorsport Diesels 10.6mm stroker CP3
FASS 150
188/220 cam, HD Push rods, and 110# valve springs (Hamilton)
Built 48RE, remote trans cooler
EFI Live - Anarchy

Previous setup was a box. BW 366/73/.91 T4 non gated. Max effort w/66 was 750hp/1450 ft lbs but sucked for A daily.

I am not chasing numbers anymore and want a super clean, very efficient, smoke free as possible fun truck. I will be towing 2-3 times a month at most 10k. So the primary is still a toss up whether a 475, 76, 78, or an 80. I'm leaning towards a 478 or maybe even a 476, but my concern is the turbine and AR sizing.

I know I am not getting a 96/1.32. I am also pretty sure I don't want the 83/1.10 because I know it's a tight charger and has the possibility of causing high drive pressure. I am leaning toward the 87/1.10 or maybe even a 92/1.10. My question is with compounds i will want to play some and when I do will the 87/1.10 cause a lot of drive pressure during any part of the rpm range? Johnny at Stainless likes the 96/1.15 but I'm not sold on it for me.

I was told by Johnny that with the waste gate spacer my 63 will open all the way now and the spring gate is a more smoother opening gate vs a can style. Is my 63 gate large enough now that it can open all the way to gate and not cause high drive pressure? Which turbine/AR would probably suit me better for daily driver/fun street truck/with good towing characteristics?

I know my injectors will limit me on peak HP number and I know I said I'm not chasing numbers but being a guy and wanting to know what HP I'm capable of is always a plus. Thanks in advance for any info you can send my way or send links for me to read. What do you guys think?
 
Why not a 96? On my 12v i make 1-2 psi from the primary on the highway cruising and tow 16k behind the truck from time to time. Truck is around 650-700hp. Temps are never ever over 1100* secondary is a 62/71/13. A 96mm will be even better on your common rail. My .02

I like you numbers and your results. I’ve been told by Brett at DPS and Fleece that the 96/1.32 will 1. Be the cheapest, 2. Keep the drive pressure down the best. Fleece also mentioned that the 96/1.32 comes on roughly around 2000 RPM’s. I know with my 63/68/.83 it is my “get ya going turbo” but figured if I had a smaller turbine it would make it even more manageable.

I think I’m scared, because when I had my 66 it was a turd and laggy and smokey. Now that I have the 63 of course it’s better, but I just want the cleanest setup and match everything the best I can.
 
I currently have the 1.15 on my truck. Gained 2psi of boost with no driving charactoristic changes. Ide also leave the 1.34 housing on it. And if you go to small on the primary you get all your boost really really quickly. That isnt what you want while towing.

That’s good to know about the 1.15. Talking with Johnny, he loves the 96/1.15 because it leaves the ability to daily drive it/fun and tow, but with the top end capability. I’ve spoke with CPS, Calibrated Power, and on their stocker kit they run a 96/1.15.

All the fancy s400 stuff (and it is cool stuff) IMO are for the max effort guys or the guys streeting s400’s as singles.
 
I agree. My 63 is the sxe has a billet wheel, but I don’t think I need a race cover or billet wheel on the primary. But the 1.32 is the cheapest and I wasn’t sure with just how streetable it could be. I like the idea of the 1.15 and just don’t want any DP issues if I went with a smaller turbine and AR.

I’ve read that turbine and AR sizing is also determined by what RPM range you are mostly in so going off that info made me think that the 87/1.10. Putting me in the middle for a balanced setup of quick spool and top end. Not sure if I’m right but haven’t seen many people running an 87/1.10. I know there could be a reason why but haven’t found a good or bad reason yet.

Also according the stainless diesel they recommended cutting the Vband off my V2 cover and running a sip his to make it fit. No thanks, I'll cut my stainless diesel cold pipe instead!
 
You need to keep in mind that 188/220 cam moves air well.

The same setup in my sig was ran with baby R1s(100hp) and made 72 psi of boost, 25-28 was from the primary!

Last primary I ran was a 6 blade billet 480/96/1.32 with a standard cover and it screamed and was easily spooled with the same R1s.

In my opinion Jose at forced induction has done an awesome job on every turbo he's built for me, and the only place I'd buy a turbo from. Not saying others are bad, I just like consistency!
 
Fwiw I was running an HE351 with a ported wastegate over an S475/96/1.32 on my truck with both a VP and P7100, even through the tiny HE351s turbine housing I had no problems getting the primary to light well before 2000 rpms and the truck always ran squeaky clean when I had the fueling dialed in right. I think an S475/96/1.15 would do exactly what you're looking for.
 
I like what your preaching blackmega! I found your post on another thread stating just about the same words. I knew that my cam would help me with spool up as well. Now I’ve heard that the 6.7 can move more air than a 5.9. How much more I do not know but was taking that into consideration.

I know people have been running a 96/1.32 on our trucks for a long time. Not trying to re-invent the wheel by going with something different other than a 96/1.32 but want to know what has worked the best for others so I can learn from everyone else’s trials and errors.

Do you think, when I rip on it and mash the skinny, will the 63 gate be able to open enough to work efficiently.

I have heard this a lot about Jose and have studied he’s website and looking at the 400’s he has... ALOT. Wanting to call and but wanting to have all the right questions to ask to not sound like a dummy, lol.

I have heard this numerous times about porting the 351 but have never needed to do it. How much more of a difference could you tell between normal 351 and ported 351?

No V2 for your setup, not needed.

In my opinion, and I'm sure others would agree a 476/96 would be a good size, or a 480/96 with room to grow.

The question you need to ask yourself is do you plan on ever throwing more fuel at it.

I’ve asked that to myself a lot bc I just recently had to get new injectors last October time frame. I was on the fence with either 100 HP OR 100% from energy. I chose 100hp because I didn’t want to have to worry about going to high in power and then questioning the realizable of my bottom end. I know it can go at anytime and so on. But don’t want to chance anything. I would like to have 800HP to the ground but other than that just looking for clean reliable power.

Why would they recommend that?

Oh was it just for fitment purposes?
 
6.7-5.9= .8L more air. LMAO

Hey.....just going off what I heard and kept it in mind. But I don’t have a 6.7 or have I rode in one that has mods similar to mine so I just don’t know. But ya never know lol
