2014 68RFE health assessment

Looking at a new-to-me 2014 Ram 2500 with about 97k miles.

As with any Chrysler transmission, I am concerned with trans health.

What all can/ should I do to review the condition of the trans?

I'm also interested in this. Does anyone that drives a 68rfe daily know what to feel for too? Like 6th/5th/4th gear slipping, long/sloppy shifts, etc...
 
I had a 12 with the 68 and now my 13. My 13 has 83k on it with no issues. At stock power the 68 seems to hold up well for most, while not perfect it does the job. 5/6 seem to be weak spots. I'm far more worried about my emissions equipment than my 68. JMO, Rye.
 
Is the truck stock or tuned? If it's tuned and abused, 5th and 6th will go first. Mine started to surge entering 5th and 6th while it was on its way out.

If the truck is stock power, I wouldn't worry about it. My '13 is stock and shifts night and day better than my '11 with power added, a transmission tune, and some billet parts inside. The 68 is a fantastic transmission for the factory power output IMO.
 
I wouldn't even worry if it's bone stock. The 68RFE does fine at stock power levels unless it's abused while towing heavy.
 
Stigma has always been 5th and 6th burning out on overpowered hard downshifts....

The most important shift in the 68 is 3-4 upshift! Feel for any delays, listen for a bark, chirp, or sqwaking noise prior to lock up.

As a side note H&S overdrive tuning is a must, stock power or not. Just to give you an idea, my old truck and last all stock 68rfe with tuning lasted well with around 580hp on a dyno amd didn't miss a beat.

What's the stock lock up strategy on the 68RFE (when does TC lock up occur)?

H&s wont tune a 14 up truck.

To the OP find a good efi tuner that has updated shift strategies and it will overall be even better to drive. I recommend hardway.
 
2010 truck has 175K on it, 150K tuned with H&S with overdrive.
2007.5 truck has 458K, 225K roughly on second transmission...still drives great.

They're not as tough as a 48RE, but daily driving and towing is light years better...stock or moderate tune is no problem from what I've seen.

My '12 lasted 345,000 towing miles and still felt great, only had to replace it due to a cracked case from vibration elsewhere. The factory reman doesn't feel as nice as that one did.

Yes sir, I did.

During the test drive I paid attention to every shift. I focused mostly on the 3 - 4 and 5 - 6 shifts. Tried various maneuvers, everything felt fine/ shifted like a factory Dodge transmission should/ does.

I will say that I am going to drive the vehicle a few months before removing the 2007/ 2013 and newer failure modes and changing the trans tune. The 1 - 2 and 2 - 3 shifts are pathetic, but it seems like the complaints that I have everyone has.
