Well, it's getting close to that part of the story where the engine comes out. The hood and fenders were pulled to avoid damage while doing the chassis work, and because I had a little work to do behind them.

Loaded up and heading to Brown's Diesel. Erick and Reb were part of my first build and they're damn sure a big part of this one too. These guys always pick up the phone and have good prices on parts.

After a couple hours of unbolting driveshafts, transfer case, transmission, fuel lines, and wiring, the engine was coming out.

Nice truck man. I've always wanted a regular cab. I've been tossin around the idea of sellin my ext cab and buyin one and just havin a semi daily driver/strip toy. I'll probably go 2wd though
 
Big single, fuel only? A 6.7 might work pretty good for that. A friend knew a guy that had one, so I grabbed it.

I built a little engine stand, and began disassembly.

The pistons and cylinder walls look beat, so it'll be getting sleeved.

But what pistons should I run? This is where I hit a wall. Most guys lean towards the wide bowl, but guys like robert ivey are making 1150 hp on stock pistons, head, and even rods.
I'm not going for all out power, as I'll only need 1000 or so to hit my goals. I considered custom pistons, but I really didn't want to be stuck in the middle of the season if I hurt one or two of them. I felt like a factory part would be good enough, and be easy to get if I needed a replacement. I ended up going with the wide bowl. Maybe next year I'll look into something more competitive if these don't do it for me.

Can't go fast without a cage. Luckily, I have some friends that have done a few. Cory and Cole Dow own Dow Brothers Race Cars, in Rancho Cordova, CA. Most of you guys know the Gray 1st gen that they have -- runs 9's. Nice guys, but victims of their own success. They do great work, and have good attention to detail. The only problem is getting an appointment with them. I put in my request as soon as I got the truck, and it was finally my turn.

I dropped it off at Dow Brothers, and we spent an hour or so coming up with a plan. While I was there, we test fit some slicks

Cory had been storing a chassis table for me from a trade school that went out of business. We loaded it up on the empty trailer and hit the road.

When it comes to the cage, chassis, suspension, etc, I feel like I have a firm grasp on where I'm headed. With all of the innovation and advances in technology and tuning, I'm really torn on whether or not I'm taking the right path with the engine build.

As of right now, It's getting .125 ductile iron sleeves, 4.21+ bore, 9-10 thou piston to wall. Polished crank, spin balanced, torq plate hone, fire ring block and head, 625's, side draft, ported head, fluid damper, etc. I need some direction on the ring package and ring gaps, bearing clearances, and whether or not to run a girdle (gorilla or other). Running a 188/220 at the suggestion of hamilton, even though I figured I'd need something more aggressive to take full advantage of the head work.
 
What are your HP goals? Single or twin turbo? Fuel only?

Single charger for now, fuel only for now. There's a good chance she'll see the bottle in the future. 1050 or better should put me close to where i hope to be e.t. wise, but i'll take all I can get.

When I set out to build this truck, I took the attitude that I'd use all of my available resources to come up with the best finished product that I could. I would do all of the work that I was capable of doing myself, and leave the specialty work up to those that do it best.

With that being said, I knew that I wanted this truck to be light, clean, and safe. When it came to the seats, I had a choice to make. The lightest seats aren't safe. The safest seats aren't light. And the seats that are safe and somewhat light were way out of my price range. The seats I ended up with are not light, but safe, and were the best I could afford.

Racetech vipers, built especially for full size trucks. When you see the cage, you'll understand why I went with the halo/containment style seat. I could have cheaped out on the passenger seat, but I want them to have the same safety I do if I ever play on the street.

Cory and I talked over different ideas for the front loop, and came up with this design.

Cory hacked out the monster rear crossmember and replaced it with a chromoly crossmember and loop.
