08 6.4 running rough and white smoke and another odd find

Had a guy call me today with an issue with his 08. Told him to drop it off and I would run codes and when I got time I would dive into it.

Well start the truck obviously running rough and white / grey smoke. No cel no codes what so ever.

The next find I glanced underneath. This truck has absolutely no dpf. Everything on the underside. Looks 100% factory. Has 2 mufflers and everything is just like factory 4" I will post pictures when I dig in deeper. I have not checked if the egr is there or not.

He bought this truck from an old man some where in south TX. Could it be a Mexico truck beings no emissions?

I have no clue I have deleted so many of these trucks and I have never seen anything like this one. Truck only had 119k. Seems to have had a really easy life. It is a full blown work truck package vinyl seats floor and roll me up windows even no cruise control. Someone installed an aftermarket kit on it.

What are your thoughts on this truck and its issues and the positive no dpf.

Could be a hung injector. Need to get a scanner on it and check rail pressure commanded vs actual. Also check the engine oil for fuel dilution.

Remove the oil fill cap when running. See if the mist that comes out is a steady stream or a rythmic puff puff puff that follows the pulses of the engine. If it is the latter, you could have a cracked piston.

Other thing is if it is a Mexico truck/flash, and another tech flashed a US version to it, the truck could be in Regen.

Just some possibilities....

I did pull the oil cap. It didnt have any visual mist or anything. Just a slight puff like some possible blow by. But nothing would think would be bad. That was with the motor at around 32degrees I didn't let it warm up much

you would know right away then, that rules out a cracked piston.

checking rail pressure, as well as checking how much low pressure fuel you have at the Schroeder valve on the fuel cooler would be the next step.

then a power balance/fuel contribution test to see what the injectors are doing

pull the upper fuel filter and check the bottom of the bowl for sparkles.

What are you using for diagnostics?

If you dont have Ford IDS, a very close second is FORScan and its free, you just need a Bluetooth ELM27 OBD adapter that supports all protocols.

This is the pics of the exhaust. No emissions but totally stock from the looks

I did check the fuel filter housing looks clean.

I have never seen FoMoCo use alignment rivets on an exhaust.

Take a pic of the two bolt flange where the exhaust meets the downpipe. If it is a stamped piece, it is likely OEM. If it is a flat flange, lasered out of 1/4 or 3/8 plate-it is aftermarket.

Ya I know what your talking about. I will crawl under and send pics once I get back home.

I'm having troubles with the elm 327 connecting. For some reason. I'm going to battle that once I get back home as well.

The smoke shes getting smells like strait fuel. I'm thinking an injector is hung open or something. But hopefully I can get the bluetooth to connect and see some more numbers and watch what things are doing

Forscan requires an adapter that can run medium speed and high speed can. I used an mx-link
Forscan is freeware. You shouldn't have to order it?

Prolly should have been more clear. I ordered the bluetooth module. Online. Downloaded the app thru the app store.

I was finally able to get the elm327 to connect. That was the codes it pulled. I watched the injectors it said no fault on all 8.
