Top End work on the Ol' LB7 273k (Studs and valve job)
So my 01 LB7 started going through coolant like a mofo a few months ago… Luckily I was able to afford a car as a daily driver so I parked the truck in the garage until I could afford to get into it. Finally ready to get into it a bit. A good buddy of mine owns a shop here called Diesel Solutions INC so he will be doing all the work.
A little back ground on whats already done to the truck..
Ive taken pretty good care of this truck its my baby but I have beat on her pretty hard through the years. Its seen a few drag strips and a couple pulls. Nothing to crazy really with motor work though, no internals yet but it has a couple little goodies. Spaghetti headers and up-pipes built by Rick Lance of ProFab, 3inch down pipe, 5 inch turbo back, ATS stage 5 with billet input and outputs, ATS 5star converter, PPE center link and sleeves, lift pump (small 100gpm) nothing on the air side just a boost fooler, EFI by a forum member and enough gauges for an air plane. I actually just picked up a FASS 220 from a buddy, I know its a lot more then I need right now but I couldn’t pass the deal up.
So for the top end build…
I looked around for a while and ended up going with Lincoln Diesel Specialists for the majority of my parts. They hooked me up with the head gasket kit with grade C gaskets, ARP studs, and a new water pump.
The heads are going to be done by Burkett Racing Engines here in NC. 3 way valve job, resurfacing, and pressure testing.
Getting the injectors flow tested.. They have close to 100k on them so I would like to replace them with a nice set of 45% or 60% overs but I can’t afford to go that route right now. Not sure if nozzles would even be worth doing with that many miles on them even being Bosch injectors. Knock on wood for an LB7 this is only its second set and its got 273k on it now.
Looked into replacing a few things on the air side while they are off (y-bridge, intake elbow, and intercooler pipe) but when i spoke to Wehrli Custom Fab they said it would be best to wait and do it all together if I planned on doing twins down the road. LB7’s don’t match parts up as easy as an LBZ or other models so I’d end up having to sell a few of the parts later on. Makes sense so.
Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do while we are in there other then a set of 3k sticks and twins??

Pull the turbo and port it/ get it worked over, maybe call and ask how much a set of the Bosch Motorsport nozzles run. It might be good to get the injectors tested, but that money could be spent on other mods if you don't plan on getting them modified. Also be a good time to swap the cp3 since it's a high mile engine.

Ok sounds good I'll look into getting the turbo done. The place that is testing the injectors is charging 25 and injector but we'll take that out of the charge if they modify them or replace them. I actually had my CP3 shut down on me this past winter so it's brand new. Thought about going with a modified but I have heard that they kind of act up a little bit so I decided to wait until I can do dual stocks.

What do yall think about nozzles? Should I spend the money on them? If an injector takes a dump at some point I can still use the nozzles on new sticks right?

Ok so don't do nozzles either? What about getting these checked? They seem to be fine. Ran strong with no haze I just figured if they are out I should?

Sounds good thanks. .
And no I don't. The shop my buddy was going to get them checked at charges $25 an injector. They did say that they would take that cost out of the bill if I used them for the work. So if I replaced one or did nozzles I guess is what they ment by that.

Rebuild, level 2 port/polish with a cast stock comp wheel 1500
Or step up to a 63.5 for 2100
If im not supposed to post prices let me know and I'll take this down.
Both seem like they would be a good way to go and the 63.5 seems to be a good way to go as a small turbo for compounds in the future.

i think you'll be okay posting those prices lol
he does real good work for a very good price.
and his modded stockers make a great high pressure charger in a compound setup. Enjoy the modded stocker for a while then throw an s480 under it later. Either route you go, you'll be happy

Hell yea, sounds like a good way to go to me. Thanks for the help. Can't pull it all off right now but I'll definitely be getting in touch with him in about a month for one or the other.
So down to the last part. . Throw nozzles on my injectors or stay stock. If I do go with injectors 30, 45 or 60s? And are certain brands I should look at and certain ones to stay away from

I would stay away from just tossing some nozzles on an injectors that is in unknown condition. You really should find a way to see the balance rates. Although the balance rates arent the whole story, they can tell you a little about the injectors health.
When you are ready to do it, do it the right way and call Exergy. http://www.exergyperformance.com/
Dont bother with 45 overs. Go 60 or jump up to 100 overs and tune them down.

Alright sounds good I'll just wait then and do it right. I'll just see what my balance rates are and if they look ok throw them back in and be done with it. I like the sound of 100 overs tuned down and the modified stock charger that will definitely be my next steps around July. Thanks again for all the help. I'll post up some pics if I can figure out how to once we get the top off of her.
