transmision shifting

i have a 1996 f 350 7.3 cc 4door and a 4 position tony wildman chip and in the tow and the hp position the trans going from second to third and back to second two or three times before it will finally stay in third is it the chip or the trans. it is real bad when pulling my 8500# camper.

Pull the chip, the the problem is still there, it's the tranny, if the problem goes away I would suspect the chip

nummit thanks for the info on the trans and chip issues i have. here is another ? there was dielectic grease on the chip connector should that stay on there or do i need to take it off? the trans still shifted the same with chip in or out so someone told me to check the trans range sensor what and where is that? thanks Frank

Yes leave the grease on the chip. As for the range sensor it is on the lefthand side of your trans where the shift cable hooks up. I have seen them short out and make the trans shift weird.
