1st time pulling. Anything secrets I need to know?

I think I'm going to enter my truck into a sled pull at a county fair down the road next weekend here in Kansas. They are having a few different classes for both gassers and diesels, and since this isn't truck pull country, I doubt the competition will be that big. Guess I'll see if I can't tear something up. Anything I can do to make it a little more interesting in case I do have some competition? All the rules I seem to have found is that it must remain street legal.

My truck is nothing special at all. No suspension work what so ever.
180 racked pump, 181 dv's, he351 turbo, 5x16's, built transmission with triple disc, 4k's. I think that is all I can think of right now. 1994 4x4 12v rclb.

I have my s464 with a 1.1 t4 housing that went out on me a month or so ago that I thought about trying to get put back together for it. I know it would be a major upgrade, but I'm not sure I can get the parts in time.

I also have a two stage nitrous kit that I haven't installed yet. I feel I'd definitely have a blown headgasket trying to use that in a sled pull though.

Also, what do I need to do for a hitch? Will just a normal clevis receiver hitch from tractor supply be fine for my truck? I don't expect it to make more than 500rwhp.

I don't plan on taking it very seriously, especially since I don't think there is really a pay out. (fundraiser for the local 4h) I do like winning though.

What tire size and gear ratio?
I would work on your hitch, try to make sure you have 26" and the hitch doesn't move around. You could probably make some quick suspension stops and use that to adjust your hitch height.

Just normal 265/75 at's and stock 3:55 gears. Will stick it in 4 low and lock the converter.

So I should be alright putting together a adjustable receiver that I can put up to 26"? Will it hinder if I try to go taller?

Shouldn't hinder, but you have a D70 back there. Not the strongest pinions. Probably 2nd locked will be your best bet. If the track is junk, and you have a smaller turbo, you might get away with drive and try to lock it, then maybe unlock it as you start to snuff the charger. Of course you you should make sure it will unlock.

Well the good news is the future father-in-law is bringing a trailer just in case.

I can flip the switch back and tap the brake to get it to unlock. I would hope I wouldn't have a problem snuffing the little he351 out, but I'm sure the s400 would be a different story. But what do I know, I'm a virgin at this.

I should also mention I'm trying to find a set of more aggressive tires to borrow being that its an open differential. The reason I'm going to do so ****ty. If I know I didn't need it I'd weld them up.

Thanks for the help so far.

FYI, nitrous is NOT street legal. I would not go that route with an HE351 either.

I just called the guy about it and literally all he said was "it just cant be real souped up, and need to have a receiver hitch." I don't even have to wear a helmet.
Also said the receiver hitch can't be oddly high.

Bump stops make a world of diffrence for traction keeps the truck from squatting in the ass real bad and will make it hook up a lot harder. Although is harder on driveline.

What is the easiest way to do that? 3x3 block or something?

Put something between the rubber stop(remove the stop) and the bump stop.

Watch wheel hop, it can be unforgiving on driveline.

Oh ya, if your going to block your suspension, make it solid, no point in having any sag. Let some air out of the front tires, gives it a little more grab in the front.

Ya. I don't think they were using much of a sled from what all I heard was going to be there anyway. And no prize money. Oh well. Lol

First time I pulled with my 05 it was bone stock. But I will admit, it was fun.
I was like you, had never pulled before. Now I'm itching to hook up again.
