What to look for when buying a pre-powerstroke

So Im trying to get a full size pick up (4cyl yota isnt doing it for me), and i really like the durability of diesels, and their pretty sweet. Anyways i was looking at the 94-00 powerstrokes, but i can barely find any within my price range. are the pre 94 diesels as good as the early 7.3 powerstroke?
What are the best years and what should i avoid when buying?

Im just looking for a full size pick up, that is the most reliable. I dont need to haul anything, or need extreme performance.
