truck dies, intermittent low power, white smoke
New here, and new to this 24v, forgive me please for any stupid questions.
Driving to work this morning, 25mph or so, let off the throttle to prepare to stop truck dies. I think, hmm... that is strange, while looking for where I can get cleanly off the road I reach down turn the key, fires right back up.. Strange.... decide may want to take back roads instead of highway incase I have another problem. Look in my rear view mirror to get right and make a right turn and truck is smoking constantly. appears to be blueish gray but window is tinted and mirror is dirty so can't tell for sure. make the right turn to head up the hill and truck isn't making any power, its going, but no power. Than, BOOM comes to life, than coming to stop sign, dies again. I turn around and head home.. I don't have much time, but open the air cleaner up to see what it looks like and its a little dirty so I crack it open and rev the truck a little just to see if it clears anything up, it revs fine, but HOLY cow, culdesac is full of white smoke.. I don't see any sign of oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. It did throw a CEL which I haven't been able to check yet. This is where I leave the truck grab another vehicle and head to work. Truck has an edge comp and fast system.. edge was off during all of this. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I will check the basics after work and see where I stand.

Pulled the code p0122 (reader won't tell me if it is PCM or ECM code) changed fuel filters, checked oil and coolant levels and for signs of any mating of fluids. Fuel filter in the canister was pretty dirty. I checked a few things on diagnosing the apps sensor but started raining harder than I was willing to stay out there and work in. Started it up, NO WHITE smoke, take it for a drive to the auto parts store (5-6 miles) doesn't skip a beat, drive it nice, drive it hard, drive it with edge on and edge off.. NOTHING.. Get up this morning to drive it to work and it literally dies in the exact same place as Friday. I pull into the fill up station, starts right back up I pull in and fill it up. Starts right back up again and I drive it back home. Not another hiccup.. My thought is it can't be starving for fuel and dying or it wouldn't fire right back up that easy. It has to be something electrical.. Guessing based on the code either the APPS or the wiring controlling the apps.
Thoughts?

Bad apps won't kill the engine, it drops to an idle. P0122 is apps voltage low, though. What code reader did you use? A lot of them won't read both the ecm and pcm .

Last one I had doing "similar" things, it was an injection pump.

APPS wont cause white smoke either. reset the apps (info is on TIMBO apps website)
i vote vp44 is going out. go to blue chip diesel.
and also check inlet pressure from the lift pump. a bad LP will kill a VP pump over time.
