Bell Intercoolers

Its hard to say if bell is worth it when trucks with frozen boost coolers are leading the pack in national events.

It would be interesting to see how much more hp they would make with a bell or garrett core. Theres alot more to it thanjust lowering iat temp. You can have a cooler the produces 80deg iat but a different cooler that makes 95deg iat but make 40hp more than the core with lower iat.
 
Our two different FB units have performed great for us. I only have IAT's for the last one though. At Antrim Saturday, IAT was 46* prior to launching and climbed to just over 90*. Air temp prior to turbo was in the 70s. I dont log pre i/c temps. We are going to try an expensive cooler next year, though. Just hard to beat FB because of the effectiveness vs cost. This is with a type 22.
 
We ran a FB A/W in our 2.6 truck last year and had Bell build a A/w this year and our intake temps dropped over 200*. They are not cheap by any means but one of the best by far.

All things the same? Including pumps, lines, fittings, etc?? Jeez, the temps with FB were out of hand, apparently..
 
I would like to try one of the bell , garrett, etc cored intercoolers but we always seem to cheap out. Our numbers temps were good with the cheap cores this year but ended up with a hole in a core so need to replace it.

On some of these numbers that are posted, where are the temps being measured? Right at the outlet of the intercooler, back of the intake, etc?
Also does anyone have pressure drop numbers across the coolers?
 
200? Its hard to believe that is even possible. With a/a trucks holding 135 degree temps and 04jimc saying 90 on the high end with his fb. I have been data logging intake air pre and post as well as water pre and post for 2 seasons now. I will agree that there are large temperature drops across an I/c but not with just a core change.

All that being said the true value here is in CFM across the core. Anyone have those numbers?
 
That was temp at the intake on the head. No pressure drop measurements. We were going to do 2 FB coolers welded together but the price for 2 of their big core coolers and welding them together was not much less than a Bell designed to our specs and fitment.
 
The Bell stays between 60-70 degrees at the intake and the frozen boost was between 240-270. The Bell does have a larger core but it is much more efficient as well. Running 100lbs of ice with just enough water to cover it in both setups the bell has maybe 10lbs left at the end of a run and the FB had about 50-60lbs.
 
It does take quite a bit of core to make the cheap coolers perform it seems. We have 1800 sq in of core area (air travels through 12" of core) and it melts 80lb during a pass with good temps. With half that area we couldn't maintain the temps on the big end and used about 50 lbs.

I wish we would have gotten some pressure drop numbers for a comparison.
 
We measure the temp just prior to the y bridge.

It is surprising to me how much ice is left over after a pull, starting out with 70lbs.
 
We measured at the back of the intake this year and still stayed below 90*F. Boost runs 40-45 psi for us at the intake.
 
Bringing this back up. Is there any other good companies to look at regarding a air to air? I have looked at bell but their stuff is pricy and I'm cheap lol. The biggest one on frozen boost site is pretty close to what i am currently running and its nowhere close to enough on my 2.5 puller.
 
Hogan makes some of the best a/a but they are pricey. All the ats/bd/htt ones seem about the same capacity. It is hard to beat water when it conducts heat almost 25x as much as air.
 
Yeah if we were allowed air to water in 2.5 we'd be doing it lol. My problem is I can't buy a big drop in for my 6.5 body puller haha

Thats good because bigger doesnt mean better just means more restriction. How do you know you need a different intercooler. What is you iat and what is your pre/post boost numbers.
 
I don't have a pre boost sensor on my data logger but I see 60 at the manifold and around 250 IAT, all I had last year was a cheap 31x3x12 IC if I'm remembering the dimensions right
