General waste of my time

Just picked up a 1986 pete 359 with a big cam 400. Going to use the engine to put in another truck I use on occasion but mostly to go weekend warrior truck pulling. going to need some help figuring out what parts I need to make this thing somewhat competitive, considering I have the only mechanical motor in the class

I have a few of these big cams laying around I can swap parts from.
These are the cpl numbers of complete engines in trucks that I have laying around
796,838,833,1374,and now 676 all in running condition other than 838 dropped the coolant into the pan.

what can I piece together with using these engines?

I have been researching injectors and can find part #'s for injector assemblies and then just nozzle part # but cant find what Nozzle comes on what assembly. looking to make this thing very hot

Your 833 is STC, if only for pulling them you can do away with it, injector selection will become key and the injectors you use will have to be set the old way because they will need the top stops removed from them.

If it’s the engine pictured than it already has a HT4 on it, that will do pretty well.

Yea sorry my group of posts weren't very clear.
You are right the engine currently in the truck is cpl833 which is stc. I just purchased the engine in the picture which is cpl676. That is the engine I plan on swapping into the truck because of high lift cam ht4 and lack of stc as mentioned. Just need to get some fresh fuel in it to see if it even runs - was told it did when parked over 10years ago

The cam in the 833 is also a high exhaust lift and it will have more injector travel if set up right.

one of the other engines I have is cpl 796 i called cummins and they told me the injector is a 3047969 which is a top stop direst fuel feed 190ak is that correct and if so would that injector be the best choice of what I have? or am I asking for trouble and just not mess around and get ahold of diesel controls to have them set me up

Same guy at Cummins also told me stock injector for 833 is 3071494 which has a 3053742 nozzle which is a 9x.0086 if that's true that injector should really put out some fuel

No stock injector is going to get you what you want, unless you also plan on trying to work the engine as wel.

Stock injector barely flows 200cc, you need to decide how far you want to go, stock plunger injector from premco in Texas can flow close to 500cc or better.

Talking to anyone at Cummins about performance is like talking to the Wright brothers about the F22.

Nothing personal to anyone but most of these guys will swear you can’t turn a 475 to 550 without changing transmissions. So expecting them to know what it takes to make 3 times the rated HP isn’t going to go well.

You are absolutely right about talking to Cummins to gain performance. That's why I called them just to gain part numbers for my own research. I don't have any access to part break downs to figure this stuff out on my own. Hence the reason I signed up on here
My goal is to be competitive in Work stock semi:
1) Vehicle must have working suspension.
2) Water injection is not allowed.
3) Maximum hitch height of 24”.
4) Must run stock RPM as written on the engine tag. (16)
5) Maximum vehicle weight is 20,000# with the hitch. No hanging of weights allowed. (16)
6) Points members must have their own hitch. (16)
7) Any DOT approved tires are allowed. (16)
8) Only Diesel and Bio-Diesel fuel may be used. No alcohol, nitrous oxide, propane, or oxygen enhancing agents allowed.
9) It is recommended to have a scatter blanket and/or steel flywheel.
10) Speed limit of 20mph.(16
11) Trailering is NOT permitted.

How far is too far before it's impossible to still pull a trailer? I'm ok with driving with an egg under the noise pedal the one week a year I might possibly work the truck

Just so you guys have an idea on competition. Only truck I feel I have to beat is an 08 Pete with isx that's deleted and has some turbo on it that makes it laggy in everyday trucking he is claiming close to 800hp I don't believe
