I was told by a reliable person that Dana (as with most axle companies) designed their axle covers in such a way that the covers help to direct the lube where it needs to be and that some aftermarket diff covers actually hurt the lubrication dispersal in the axle, overall.
Something about the ring gear and cover allowing the lube to "crawl" up the cover and over the carrier and bearings?
