Need a straight answer

Just picked up a complete 6.7 minus turbo, ecm, and injectors for a great price to replace a 5.9 in a 04.5 truck I purchased that melted #2 piston. If not building a hot rod, just a DD. I've searched and read and it seems like I'm getting two different answers for my question and most of the posts are a few years old and I'm sure things have changed and we have more knowledge. Do I use the 6.7 cylinder head to keep the steam holes or use my 5.9 head to block them off? I know I have to use early CR 143* injectors so if I should run the 6.7 head will the 5.9 injectors fit or do I have to modify the head? I've read both ways.

Thanks

I could be wrong, but the only concern with the steam holes is when someone is tossing on a 6.7L head onto a 5.9L block and people deciding on if they wanted to modify in order to get the advantage of the steam holes.

If you've got a complete 6.7L block and aren't shooting for over 1000hp, and your 5.9L head isn't a $9000 fully ported, huge valve, custom intake shelf head, I wouldn't worry about it.

The steam holes are here because coolant can't flow completely around the 6.7 cylinders since they are siamese blocks. The steam holes' purpose is so the hot coolant somewhat trapped in the low spot in between the cylinders can go up and into the head to get away. In my opinion, on a street engine, stem holes in the head are necessary to prevent hot spots in the cylinders

Also, if you want to run the 5.9 injectors you will want the 5.9 head.

Ok so keep the 6.7 head, so what has to be done to the head to use 5.9 injectors?

I would recommend keeping the 5.9 injectors and putting the 5.9 head on the 6.7. You can run 6.7 injectors and 6.7 head, but the 5.9 ECM doesn't play nice with 6.7 injectors when they are cold.

5.9 injectors will work in a 6.7 head, but not the other way around.
The injector bore in a 5.9 head is just enough taller that the nozzle holder on a 6.7 injector won't seal the nozzle hole in the head.

Mark.

So these are my two options correct?

6.7 block, keep 6.7 head for steam ports and run 03-04 5.9 cr injectors.

6.7 block, run 5.9 head to delete steam ports and run 03-04 5.9 cr injectors.

If the steam ports are better for DD then I would say keep 6.7 head if 5.9 injectors will work without modification. This would be great because I can keep the long block assembled. I was reading this post earlier today about a guy doing almost the same swap back in 2012 and he said his 5.9 injectors didn't seal in the 6.7 head. He did have a bunch of other issues going on so post like this have me confused because im getting different answers. 2003 5.9-----6.7 swap - Bombed Cummins - Modified Cummins Diesel and Cummins Swap forum
