BMW 335D M-Sport build

I sold my daily driver (03 Jetta TDI) a couple weeks ago and found my replacement recently: a 2011 BMW 335D M-Sport. I'm flying to Newark on Friday to drive it about 19 hours home. Already have a bunch of parts to install once I get it home. Factory is around 265 hp and 425 ft lbs, my new setup should get it close to 400 hp and 600 ft lbs and still maintain 40+ mpg on the highway. :rockwoot:

Sounds like a great ride!!!

That was the alternative I was considering to the 2015 Cruze Diesel I ended up getting as a CPO with only 4,100 miles and full warranty!!!

Finally, someone I can communicate with owns one. lol

Do you know if the transmissions will take it??

Also, I should probably do some research to see if the all the bell (M-47, M-57, v/s gasoline models) patterns are the same.

Check out Bimmerfest and Super Turbo Diesel.

I have a performance box in one of the harnesses that came with my engines. I'll send it your way if you want it.

Bob Molinari made a billet aluminum flywheel for our project should you need anything along those lines.

I'm not much for factory warranty or dealers, so the first thing to happen is a stage 3 tune, dpf delete, scr gut, hog out the wastegate on the large turbo, intercooler upgrade, egr delete, swirl flap delete, all new vacuum lines (known issue on these) and some routine maintenance (trans service, new tires, brakes, etc).

Lots of info on the E90post.com forums...

Transmission is pretty stout and someone recently came out with the ability to modify the transmission control settings (shift firmness, speed, lock up sooner, etc). I believe the max torque rating for the transmission is 600 ftlbs. If all else fails they don't look much different to rebuild than any other auto trans (video on youtube from start to finish).

The turbo setup is interesting, basically both turbo's have internal wastegates, however the exhaust manifold also has it's own wastegate (built into the manifold) that opens to bypass the small charger...

Any idea what brand the performance box is?

I'm going to try aluminum rods in one engine. I had Pauter cut out two sets of forged rods modeled after the factory BMW Rods.

I will be selling one set of rods. Need to look up price. lol I remember it was a bunch.

Purchased it yesterday, man do I love this thing! Averaged about 78 mph thru Pennsylvania and netted 33.7 mpg.

Do they have a timing belt/chain that needs replacing every 100K like VW TDI's?

Just curious what's ballpark on making them run "correctly"? Anymore room inside over your MK4?

That is sharp, however I still struggle with the extra cost of a diesel. I had several gassers and every one of them got 30+ at 75mph average speeds.

They use a chain and no they don't require replacement every 100k like a VW. I'll have to see what the recommended interval is, but my research hasn't found it to be an issue in the M57 engine.

This would be a Stage 2.5 tune setup:

Replacement intercooler to turbo boost pipe (factory is known to leak over time) $129
Remove exhaust, cut open and gut SCR, weld back shut. $0
DPF delete downpipe $600 (there is a cheaper version for $450)
EGR full delete pipe $225
Swirl flap delete $40
JR stage 2.5 tune $999
intake manifold gaskets $30
Vacuum hoses $25
Port wastegate on secondary turbo $0

Total of $2048

This would net you 345 hp and 544 torque to the wheels.

Stage 2.8 includes a different tune (+$300) and an bigger intercooler (+$600) for 379 hp and 595 torque.

Factory fuel pump provides enough fuel for either option and a secondary filter down to 2 micron can be added for ~$150.

Quite a few guys run a water/meth kit as well to help clean out the cylinder and around the valves due to the EGR sludge build up (coming from prior to the EGR delete).

I understand. I've just never been impressed with anything gas powered that netted over 30 mpg.

HAHA, yea it was a dodge intrepid, and a chrysler concorde. Both of which would down shift on an incline with the AC on at 75mph.

And people have logged some reasonable miles on the trans while hotrodding at those levels?

Yes, seem to be quite a few on the forums. Transmission is a ZF 6HP28 rated for 550 ftlbs. Traction becomes an issue before anything else... It's used in quite a few different vehicles, many are much heavier than the car.

Here's an interesting article on it's newer version the ZF 8HP:

One Transmission, Countless Cars: The ZF 8HP Eight-Speed

Just recently somebody came out with the ability to tune the transmission in the 335d for increased performance (looking to do this as well).
