CAT engine application question

I am looking for any information regarding the CAT 4.4L 3506 4cyl engine and what it came in. I'm also looking for any turbo 4cyl cat engine that is similar in power rating to the 3506 and what those engines might be in. If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated. Thanks for the help

Sometimes those smaller cat engines pop up on auction time. Also ritche brothers has a page on there website with specs for equipment. I really dont rember what those engines were put in.

backhoes had alot of the 4 cyl engines in them and were very dependable, i work for a cat dealer btw

the older 3056 turned into a 4.4 common rail ACERT engine. most of the higher rated ones are in telehandlers i believe

I think you are talking about the the 3054 which is a Perkins engine rebranded as a cat. A 3506 would be a big 6 cylinder, anyway the 3054 started as a 3.9 liter and now has been bumped to 4.4 acert. I liked the smaller version better very efficient and put out good power, i dont think you will find it rated much higher the 130 or so.

you guys are correct ive looked and the best i can find is int telehandlers and yes they do make a 3506.

Thanks for the input; it will at least give me a good place to start looking. Now I need to find a salvage yard that sells machinery parts. How interchangeable are the parts, say between a 4.4L to a 6.6L since they are from the same family of engines according their website?

Quick breakdown of older CAT engine number system. First 2 digits are the engine series, next 2 are number of cylinders. You better double check and make sure you're not transposing numbers. 3054 and 3056 are tiny little Perkins Cats, 3500 series engines power mine equipment and are prime movers for 1-2megawatt generators. 3056 and 3506 would be opposite ends of the spectrum. And I don't believe a 3500 series Cat comes in a 6 cylinder. Smallest I've ever seen or heard of is 3508. and for your size perspective, A 3508 powers a CAT 777 100ton haul truck at about 1000hp. So are we talking the same scope?

Heres a couple CAT 3500 engines from work.

3524 from a 797B 400ton haul truck. 3500 series, v24, 4500hp.

I've worked on 3054s and 3056s as well, they're loving called Perkapillars. You know 100-200 horsepower jobbers. Not at all the same as 3500 Cat engines. Better verify the source of that info.

I wondered about that ad that says 3506.....it didn't sound right because in my mind a 3506 would be bigger than a 3406.....and a 3406 is a big engine. I used to work on those little perkapillar's in the cat backhoes but I couldn't remember what they were called.

Ya, I'm 100% sure someone typo'ed the model number. What ever engine you guys are thinking about, its not any 35xx Cat. And I'm nearly sure, its the small 4 and 6 cylinder perk cats 3054 3056, that you want.

Thanks, that will be a big help. Do you have any info on the C 3114, 3204 or 3304 engine series? I've seen them listed on a dieselenginetrader.com but I can't find any specs on them on the CAT website. I know that they are obviously all four cylinders and, I am assuming that they go up in power rating as the the series numbers increase but I do not know more than that.

3304 is an archaic idi monstrosity. They weigh a ton and don't make much power. Sister to the 3306, they were in lots of machines decades ago. Pretty big though, the 3306 was a 12L ish range.

Can't say I've ever seen a 3204. 3208s were garbage on a good day.

3114. Not Terrible, have some issues with injector cups leaking. Huei injection. A friend put one in an off-road buggy. Hopped it up to about 200hp iirc. Got it out of a backhoe I think. I've got pictures of that beast somewhere.

That would be something to see. I am toying with the idea putting the 4.4 ACERT in my S10 as opposed to a 4bt just to be different. The trick will be finding one. I just got hired on as a tech at a CAT dealership so maybe I'll get lucky. I know I can fairly easily get 300 hp from a P-pumped 4bt, how much power do you think I could reliably squeeze out of one of those 4.4's?

You mean before the head gasket blew, or you dropped a valve?

Not a big fan of them since they went to the Tier 3 emissions standards. WAY too many top end problems, and they seem to eat injectors faster than our other engines. We don't have a ton out there, but what we have had, have been hit or miss.

BTW, mine were the real Perkins version in MF tractors

Stick with the 4BT, or if you want odd, go with a Deutz air cooled, or a Sisu Diesel. Those are odd engines that are worth looking at I think I have a Sisu 4.4L 105hp left around here...
