I feel like that's cheap these days...

I believe one is set up for RWD and one is set up for FWD.

I love the gear spacing of the 5600, but every other aspect of it's existence is garbage. Well, I guess I shouldn't say that; as heavy as they are they'd make a great boat anchor.

Coming out of a '99 with a NV4500, the NV5600 was an amazing improvement. I've only driven a G56 a few times but wasn't nearly impressed with it shifting in the short time I drove it. I sure do miss my manual....until it's time to drop the hammer and merge with traffic.

I’m curious why everyone dogs the 5600? My dads truck has one with 430k on it. Minus a few clutches and hardly any fluid changes, it still shifts fine.

The 4500 has the obvious 5th gear nut issue that can wipe out lots of components if you really lug in 5th when loaded. 2nd to 3rd gear spacing is too far, and reverse is too tall for backing trailers.

From my experience, I’d rather a G360 over the 4500 if you’re driving sensible. And the 5600 over both of those.

Try a zf6 then, almost identical gear ratios. And the ford version has an oil pump that goes to a cooler out front.

Does a ZF6 bolt up to a Cummins adapter plate? Or did you use an aftermarket adapter?
I’ve often thought about finding a ZF6 to replace my 5spd in the 91. I have a 4500 to put in there, but I do not see the benefit over the current G360. Also have a NP205 that needs to mate up to the ZF. Would it be adapter city on my drive line?

Bought the adapter plate for 550,and I used the ford electric shift 271.not sure what else you could use. Zf6s come up cheap for some reason though, atleast around me.

I think they're cheap because they rarely break. I wish I'd done a zf6 in my 99 instead of the 5600. They shift so much nicer, and the price difference would have made up for the adapter cost.

I destroyed three of them in 70k miles. I’ll admit, the first one may have been my fault. I learned a bit too late not to give sixth gear too much torque; that little gear just couldn’t take it and I sheared the teeth right off. Whoops. All the others have been bearing failures due to the extremely poor oiling that they have. Tried every brand/weight of oil and different fill levels. Nothing helps. That zf6 swap sounds interesting. I’ll have to look into that for sure.

This will be the 2nd time 6th gear has failed in this 5600, in 97k miles. Its an antique tractor guy, im guessing he likes to lug it and use the torque while towing his tractors.
All the reman facilities are 4-6 weeks out, some have no cores to start on so they would need this one first. I actually was recommended 2 local shops that a friend has had good experiences with prior. The one that has the trans now says 1 week turnaround provided parts are available

Something to keep in mind if looking to swap to a zf6. It is physically bigger than a NV4500, so if swapping; your trans tunnel may need to be modified for it to fit. Ford actually used a different trans tunnel size in their trucks between zf6 and an auto. I know a NV4500 will fit in a Ford auto tunnel, but the zf6 will not (trans is too tall). All that being said, I had a zf6 behind a 12v in my Fummins and it was a great trans and I towed with it 80% of the time I drove it.

Who were the local shops? PM if you'd like, I have one that's needing bearings most likely.

I am researching my options for rebuilding and/or replacing my NV5600 - It has decided it does not want to stay in 5th or 6th gear when decelerating in gear...... very annoying.

I have read about the ZF6 swap - but I have learned there are 2 different versions of that trans and it does matter for the gear ratios.

either way, it isn't a small chunk of money to spend and I don't want to spend it twice.
