Compound Tuning

I went to the track the other night and ran a 12.3 at 113mph. So I got some improvement, trans still isn't shifting where I would like; letting off the pedal to shift. Then on my last run I blew out an exhaust manifold gasket. Upon disassembly I found that I have a few cracks on the inside of the turbine housing? How serious is this?

Cracks are common and they will get worse over time. They slowly grow under normal use, quickly grow when you blast them with high temp exhaust during 1/4 mile runs. I'd say it took me 300 1/4 mile passes from the time of first cracks to complete external cracks and destroyed exhaust housing.
 
Thanks for the info Will. So you are saying run it! Lol. I felt really doomed when I first seen this because I expected a quick fix. For some time I have considered swapping it to an HE351CW but between having to change the plumbing and finding a good used turbo, I haven't done it. Others have thrown out the idea of running a 57mm S300 but I just can't justify it right now.
 
Everyone in this thread is like "towing with a 64 is gonna suck" I'm over here like.... single s475 and 3k stall, no problem towing! Hahaha

On the turbine housing, go ahead and run the heck out of it. Then claim the forced upgrades when it's time for bigger and better!

Replaced my manifold gaskets and paid close attention to any potential exhaust leaks. Added a divider in my manifold to split the T3 flange between #2 and #3, leaving about a 3/16 gap between the divider and the t3 flange to allow some crossflow. I also put the mechanical fan back on for the summer.

Off idle to 10psi feels like it improved quite a bit. Drive pressure is up 10psi across the board. Spool feels about the same. But overall power seems to have dropped a very noticeable amount. Maybe it is just the 90 degree weather the past few days, but I'm really having to try hard to break the back tires loose. I don't know what is going on and I'm starting to get frustrated.

I'm going to be working with the spring gate tonight to see what I can muster out of it. Maybe its just a tuning issue with the manifold now being divided. I took some time to put together a Spring Gate Calculator to at least attempt to "gauge" where my settings might actually be. These aren't my current specs in the worksheet, but if you guys could take a look to point out any bugs I would appreciate it.

If this is even anywhere remotely close to correct then I would say I need to tighten this guy up. It would explain a lot, especially with the divided manifold; it wouldn't make it too difficult for every exhaust pulse to blow open the wastegate....

Bring your S475 and 3K stall here and hook to my trailer...you won't like it.

64's are fine, but not on a 12v.

Just because you don't mind watching your pyro like a hawk trying to tow with a 3" charger doesn't mean everyone want's to do it. I used to tow some with my 98 12v with a HE551V on it, but I wouldn't hook it to the 35' trailer and load it like I would the 95 12v with the S358ET on it...

To each their own...

Reason I mentioned the 64 was most his updates are quarter mile times. I figured his priority was a hot rod, occasional tow.

I'd love to come down from 7k elevation to tow. So much better! I also don't really have a pyro, I downshift to third and run some rpm and it works. I never really said everyone wants to do it, but I think it's comical how I'm very loose on my idea of streetable and towable running around with a 475 as a single yanking header trailers and a couple big gooseneck trailers. Yet some guys on here have major problems with the slow spool of a 64. That's really where my comment was going.

I wouldn't say that this is an incorrect statement... lol I did originally build this thing to tow, and be super fun on the street. I got hooked on racing and will now be pursuing that more. But I still want a VERY streetable fun rig that won't have any problems pulling the grades around here with a 30ft toy hauler hooked up the maybe 3-4 times a year that might happen.

SOOO. any thoughts on the numbers the calculator spit out? I checked my spring rate calculation on a scale using a benchtop drill to compress it an inch, its within .5LB/in accurate.

I was thinking I wrote it in a way that people would think towing with a big single is insane. Haha, I would only tell my close friends to go ahead and run a s475 and hook it to a trailer. Hehe :D

I'm not sure who would get butt burn over a comment like that, at some point I quit caring what people think of my posts. Heck I converted a commonrail to a 12 valve if that tells you anything!

I put a stiffer spring on the wastegate and re-set it. MAN, what a difference! Watching the DP gauge made it evident that before the pulses would blow it open during spool up, I can now see about 7-10psi of quick fluctuation where before it was decently steady. Spool up is a lot quicker and I can blow the rear tires off in 2nd and 3rd from a 25mph and 45mph roll.

12.16! New best, and there's still more there.. I let off completely at 1000 foot attempting to not "break out". Still broke out. I vice gripped the TV cable before this run to try to get it to shift closer to where I want, still not perfect but definitely an improvement. I can feel my single disc converter starting to slip though. :(

After this thread and the calculator I made, I was really curious to see what kind of movement you really get out of a spring gate. I had to set it up a little far away, but you can watch the spring gate move in this video. I was surprised to see maybe on 3/8" of movement with a total of 90psi drive pressure.
