"W" terminal on alternator ?

Want to use the alternator for the tach signal

Purchased a diesel tach interface unit (Dakota digital) DSL-1 E

Does anyone know where the info is to modify the alt, to make the "W" terminal ?
I know the alt has to be disassembled

Thanks

Search on yoitube. Easy diagrams. Dd told me that they were not positive if a modified alt would read ok, so i decided to try it. Dont have the motor running yet but i added a w terminal to a gm 1 wire alternator. Extremely easy to do. Add a wire to one of the field winding terminals.

Just out of Curiosity how does that pick up accurate crank speed ? I see that it seems to work but I don't understand how.

If I was to guess...

By the frequency of the electrical current measured in Hz. The faster you spin the alternator, the higher the frequency. It was like my dad's old F150. Turn it to a certain radio channel and you can hear the alternator whine like a supercharger.
