13+ 68rfe modding for HP

Now that I have Efi on my 14 ram I'm looking to up the reliability of the trans. Hardway tune has revised transmission tuning already and is smooth as glass. Feels like the truck blows through the converter til lockup. Advertised as 170psi line pressure. My question is what is the next step? Already have plans to order Phil's triple shortly. And was thinking something like the worked over sun coast oil pump. Does the tuning negate the need for VB upgrades? Goal is around 650ish hp.

Honestly a Transgo shift kit works rather well. Not many parts to it and real easy to install.

My brother builds a lot of autos so it should be simple enough. I just cringe at the $8000+ price of decently built 68's. Seems to be a different game to the 4 speeds.

Revax 850 or suncoast mega. Hell they might be 10k without an in. They have all the goodies. Might be a little overkill for what I'm needing. I won't go more than small compounds and nozzles.

Over priced! You' d be surprised at what your paying for. Essentially cut down reaction plates. Their fleecing the market.

For what I build 5800 bucks installed with a DPC triple and a Mag Hytec pan. Add another 800 for an 300 m input.

Firepunk built my 68RFE in my last truck and it was flawless. DPC triple disc and Firepunk valvebody and build. They use Suncoast hard parts and SFI flexplate. Give them a call and see what they can do for you.

I'd say within the month I'll be pulling the trans. Any recommendation of hard parts list I should be aquiring? I don't have a problem tearing the tranny all the way down if needed.

I wish I could help you. I know Lavon will only build a 68 one way. I know the U/L sprag is weak and will break with very little boosted launch.

Adam,

At very minimum billet input 300M and Phil triple disc. The stock converter is already a two disc just no from hub. High Energy Clutches. They have Alto Reds for them but kinda pricey unless that's what you want. Or Raybestos has a decent clutch out for them now too. Get all new sensors and solenoid pack, sensors are cheap and the solenoid pack is not too terrible either. The Transgo kit will also have the thicker snap ring for the under drive plate.

Kinda have to think to yourself just how far you want to go. The hard parts is what costs the most on these transmission. Billet input, billet front clutch hub and so on.

I don't think FirePunk even does the 68 anymore because they are so finicky.

You can even buy specific parts from RevMaxx if you want to have your brother help you with it. From what I've heard, the TransGo kit doesn't do much, which makes sense since this is a band-less solenoid controlled transmission.

And even some guys who get the RevMaxx or OM3GA have them fail quickly, which both suppliers say is based on tuning.

I know of a few people that used that BD in line controller thing and liked it, but I still thought they felt soft and like you said, 'blows right through the TC'.

The real solution is a 47rh/re or 48re swap. It just seems as though nobody has nailed down the 68rfe, and it's unfortunate because it's a really comfy DD trans.

Just my two cents after doing a ton of HW when I was going to buy a 4th gen.

I could be wrong about that part, but I didn't see them around 4-6 months ago when i was looking for a 4th gen.

EDIT:
I don't see it, but I'd be interesting in looking through the page if you find it:

I've never seen the 68 on their website anytime that I have looked. I dunno.

I'm years from being able to build one.

What is the cost difference to do a 48re swap? Or even a standard swap?

I don't have any plan on swapping a transmission on a truck with 15,000 miles.

47rh (no controller needed) you're looking at maybe $4k to find one and have it decently built, then the price of some drive shafts being lengthened/shortened, probably a custom trans mount, and maybe an adapter plate for the TCase or a different TCase.
Probably under $6k if you do a good deal of the labor.

48re built with a controller is going to be a lot more though. Maybe $10k? Not sure what the controllers run.

After the 68 dies, it might be cost effective to.

After calls to suncoast and revmax I'm in about the same boat. The information I was given was basically run it til it blows and rebuild it or buy one of ours.

Initially I wanted to do the minimum. Now I'd say 3-4k after converter.

I'm throwing around the idea of playing with a second gen swap for a while.
