Will a 48re 6 pinion planet mesh with the 5 pinion shell?

I’m wondering if I need to order the 48 pinion outer gear also

For which pinion? I will take it upon me and assume you are talking about the planetaries. If it is the one for the OD unit then no. If it is the front or rear then yes. You need to change the annulus gear with it.

Sorry I was posting in a hurry this morning. The planetary I speak of is the front one. So I need to change the gear it sits inside of also ? I currently have a 47re steel 5 pinion in my 47rh. I came across a deal on just the 6 pinion planet itself and was hoping I could swap planets and not have to order 48re forward clutch frictions.

I was also a bit wrong on this. You can use a 5 pinion annulus gear with the 6 pinion. You have to run the right spacer though (the plastic spacer ring on the bottom). I forgot when the 48's first came out the only way to run Altos was to run the 47re annulus gear. The tooth count is really the only thing that changes.

48re front planet is 100% interchangeable with 47re 5 pinion steel and 47rh 5 pinion aluminum planetaries, however, the nude colored torlon plastic isolator is different length because 48re ring gear is different thickness than 47re ring gear so just reuse the 47re ring gear and 47re planetary plastic isolator and it's a 100% direct swap. If you are upgrading a 47rh, the 47re steel 5 pinion and 48re steel 6 pinion both fit as 100% direct swap but the 47rh aluminum planet does not have a plastic isolator so you'll need to locate a 47re isolator.

The rear 48re 6 pinion steel planet is different overall height than a 47re/47rh 4 pinion aluminum planet and therefore is not a direct swap unless you customize parts for clearance or swap out the rear ring gear, sunshell/gear, and forward ring gear to make everything stack up correctly.

In the overdrive, the 48re 6 pinion overdrive planet is a 100% direct swap for a 47re 5 pinion steel planet and late model 47rh 5 pinion angled steel planetaries. Some of the early 47rh (mostly 1994 model year) came with straight cut overdrive planet 5 pinion steel setups and they are not compatible with the newer helical cut 5 pinion steel 47re and 6 pinion steel 48re planet sets.

Thanks for the info! I’m on my 17th build and I have acquired a few isolators and have bags of thrust washers.

48re od pinion worth swapping in ? I will be shooting for 700+ hp on this trans. Stock size tires, 3.54 gears. I also will be spraying it a little
