Melting_pistons build thread

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here, but I’m not necessarily new to the forum. I’ve used it as a go to source for info over the last 5 years or so...so thanks in advance to all of those unnamed heroes lol.

Anyways, I figured I’d make a build thread for my truck...this isn’t really the start of a build...as I’m actually about a year and a half into it. But maybe there will be some useful info in here for someone else, or maybe you guys will have some advice for me going forward. All criticism is welcome, as long as it’s not trolling. I’ll try to update as time allows.

Well I guess to start it off, about 7 years ago I bought my 2006. It was the first diesel I ever owned that I actually “played with”...over the following 5-6 years, it got repainted, color matched, and went through gosh knows how many tire and wheel setups. Eventually, I wanted to start going to the track, so things started to progress. It got tuning from Anarchy, Flux 1.8 (26% over) injectors, AirDog 165 4g, PPE Dual Fuelers, ARP 2000s, and Hamilton valve springs and pushrods, and a WC Fab Stock/475 compound kit. The trans is from Tim Barber at TRE Diesel. I’m estimating it makes around 720-750, as it runs consistent low 7.5s at 91mph.

This is it below.

About 2 years ago, I decided that wasn’t enough. I wanted to build a 6.70 truck. The issue, is that nothing with my current setup would work for the power needed to run those times. It would need a complete overhaul. So after much deliberation, I decided to leave my truck alone as a fun, reliable, DD/tow rig and buy it’s twin!

So here is what I got... a 2007 Laramie that had a pieced together 2nd gen swap with a 72, Industrial Injection dual stock pumps, and a “built” trans with fmvb.

Here are some pics from the trip going to pick up the 07. Was a 13 hour round trip, and the 06 towed flawlessly as always!

The next week I loaded up the regular cab project and shipped it off to its new owner, to help fund the new truck... the wife said one of the 3 has to go lol

I’m not going to name the tuning company, but the tune on the 07 was definitely sub par. So 2 weeks after getting the truck I had Ryan write me a tune file. It drove a whole lot better... two days later the “built” trans said no more. The truck sat for a couple of months while I saved for another trans.

Of course this time I took it to my guys at TRE Diesel Performance to get the works. This time, it got all the bells and whistles...including a 2200 stall DPC Converter paired with a Santjer Performance Development solid input setup, and Muldoon’s FMVB. To say it drove like a whole different truck is an understatement!!

How do you like the WC fab compound setup?

I’m not going to knock them too much. The kit definitely performs well. Install wasn’t bad. I had a couple of questions going into it, and their customer service wasn’t up to par with the pricing of the product...not to sound rude. But I got it all figured out. A couple weeks after installing it, I didn’t realize that the downpipe was rubbing the ac line and had cracked it...

But like I said, I don’t want to knock them too bad. Other than the ac issue, I’ve been running the kit for years now with no other problems to date.

Finally got time to get it up to TRE Diesel Performance to get this trans issue figured out... I can’t remember all the ins and outs of what we found wrong... but I do know it was missing a ton of necessary (small) parts to make this thing hold together. Also, a lot of the clearances/end play was set incorrectly. (Excuse my lack of knowledge, I’m not a trans expert lol)

I knew I didn’t want to stick with the normal trend of 17-18” wheels with radials, so I jumped on this set of 20” welds when I saw them come up for sale. They have a very small amount of pitting that I was able to polish almost all of it out. Also two of the wheels had jacked up lug holes where someone was running adapters and they came loose. I machined a set of inserts to repair them... now they are good as new! (Or as good as you can expect a set of chrome welds to be)

I had to turn these down a little to make them fit

Im not a fan of a ton of stickers being plastered all over the windows, so I decided to wrap the tailgate with a 3m carbon fiber pattern, and use it to put all of my stickers on. Got the idea from @mopar1darrell on Instagram.

After talking with Miles Barringer for a while, I settled on a set of Mickey Thompson ET Streets to go on these welds. They turned out pretty sweet for the time being.

I knew I wanted to do rear mount shocks on the rear axle so I got firepunks rear shock bracket kit... very good quality

I drove the truck for about 1000 miles to break in the trans before taking it back off the road. I wanted to go a different route on the turbo than this pieced together 72. I also wanted to take advantage of the downtime to do some more clean up under the hood. I sold the turbo setup, and while waiting on the new kit I cleaned/painted the block, and did a little bit of a wire tuck.
