Power Driven UCC Build 2017

Back in October 2016, Power Driven got an invite.... "callout" to the 2017 Ultimate Callout Challenge. For those not familiar with the event, it's a contest where roughly 30 trucks compete in a three tiered diesel performance event with points awarded for each of the three contests: Drag Race Elapsed Time, Chassis Dyno HP & Torque, and Sled Pulling.

There are very few rules but the basic outline is simple, build a diesel-powered truck that can perform well in all three events. Swapping tires, major chassis components, engines, transmissions, etc. are all allowed. The event organizers campaign UCC as a contest to push forward diesel performance innovation.

Power Driven is in the unique position of fielding the only mechanical injection 12v Cummins entry. Many onlookers have questioned if that puts us at a major disadvantage with the limitations of fixed timing and imprecise injection control associated with mechanical injection. The tickled by wire crowd (Common Rail Injection Supporters) are quick to point out that dinosaur power is dead, and that the mechanical mafia is an old folk tale. We hope to field a respectable and competitive mechanically injected 12v Cummins entry and chronicle some of the build on this forum.

Here's a few pictures of the truck from back in October:

We've been playing with this truck at the drag strip for a couple years now, here's an old video from 3 years ago when the truck had a little over 1000 HP:

Last summer we spent quite a bit of time on the chassis dyno tuning-in the engine combination to prepare it for full-power drag strip passes. It's making quite a bit more power than it did 3 years ago:

Although 1800 HP is probably more power than we can stick to the drag strip in the leaf-sprung Super Street legal chassis, it still isn't powerful enough to be a top contender in the field of heavy hitters going to UCC this year.

Subscribed. I think everyone has forgotten about mechanical injection these past couple of years, other than the sled pullers, of course. Excited to see what y'all do with it!

And here I am worrying about my timing slipping with a 13mm pump.

Is this going to be a filled block?

In order to "up" the airflow through the cylinder head, we knew the previous ported/worked over factory 12v head would limit our high RPM power potential. Zach over at Hamilton Cams came to rescue with his newly released War Head!!!

For those looking at the Hamilton War Head upgrade for their race project, there are some other upgrade costs and benefits to consider when upgrading to this head such as: new larger/longer valves, new longer head studs, cost savings from the factory cut-off intake shelf, and massive 270 CFM airflow as-cast with small valves and the potential for over 350 CFM with large valves and porting.
