Axle Identification

I have a 95 RCLB 12valve NV4500

It could have the following combos from what I've read.

Front / Rear

Dana 60 / 70

Dana 60 / hybrid 80

Dana 60 / 80

What is the best way to make sure what rear end it has and what gear ratios are in it?

Does it have a vin tag or assembly tag? All my dodges do it’s under the hood it will state all that, or write down the vin and call dealership, they can give you that

Wher would / should it be located?

I believe you gave the recommendation of the motor vin plate on another thread of mine....It is missing

Wouldn't surprise me if this one is too.....So many weird things missing out/off this truck as to information...hope it ain't stolen lol

Only tag that I have been able to locate when searching this that should be there is the P pump tag thank god...got the 180 pump woohoo lol.

Seriously tho you have been really helpful with all your responses

Look on the actual differential it should have a data tag held down my 2 cover bolts. The vin number can be found on the front drivers side of the dash or the drivers door. My 98 CCLB NV4500 with a 215 Pump had factory 4.10 and a Dana 80

I meant the assembly tag...I know where the vin number is. Apparently my questions make me seem really dumb lol

Both of my second gens had the assembly tag on the underside of the hood close to the hood latch

A hybrid has Dana 70 outer parts and a Dana 80 differential. The easiest way I know of to tell them apart is axle tube diameter. The hybrid necks down outboard of the leaf spring perch.

There is typically a code tag, or build tag, on the passenger's side of the core (radiator-A/C, intercooler) support upright.
It will bear the full VIN and a series of letter/number codes.

Haven't looked into the codes on these trucks, but if it were on a 1960-1980 MoPar car, I could tell you a lot about what it says.

Mark.

I can't tell you what ratio your axle has, but here's what came stock on all trucks from '94-'02:

REAR
  • Auto - Dana 70
  • Manual - Dana 80
  • All Dually's - Dana 80 DRW

FRONT
  • ALL - Dana 60

Now, the Dana axles that Dodge used are NOT the same Dana axles as you will find in other applications.

The D70's Dodge used are specified as a D70-U. They use different bearings, carriers, and axles from a D70 used on a Ford.

Same with the D80's. Internals are not the same as the D80's in the Fords or other applications.

So if I wanted to buy axeles and a locking diff. what would I get it for?

From what I am seeing they just say dana 80.

To come close to checking ratio, rotate rear tire 1 revolution & count how many times driveshaft goes around.

Dana 80 has a little more material on the ‘pumpkin’ and says 80 by the pinion about 2inches wide. If you have 4:10 gears you won’t be able to go much past 85, it sucks.

Hi newbie here, if you post your vin I can run it and at the very least tell you what the truck was built with and ratio. Or you can pull the cover and count ring gear teeth and divide it by pinion gear tooth count that will give you the ratio
