The old legend of the putting a clutch in front of an automatic transmission, replacing the torque converter. So you launch like a manual but shift like an auto.

Based on what I've read, these were "rather popular" in the 60's/ 70's but were obsoleted by better (and I imagine lock-up) torque converters. I can't find one for sale in the first few pages of Google, short of old stuff that doesn't seem to be in much demand.

Are there still people that run these things in any application? Has anybody ever actually seen or had one?

How common were they really?

I think Lencos kind of killed that market. There are lenco setups that go the other way with a converter.

I'm almost positive the maroon truck that was so quick back in the day ran a clutch mated to an auto trans. Truck was referred to as the Grinch? Or something like that. I saw it run in person back a few times in Bradenton.

Was thinking this too^^^^.
