I am going through my 48RE after realizing I had a slipping issue which I thought was TCC related. This transmission was previously rebuild after loosing reverse. The forward clutches are burned pretty bad. I wasn't paying enough attention when I pulled them out but I believe that the straight snap ring was used for the belleville spring and the wavy snap ring was used for the clutches. Direct clutch pack also had the last steel and pressure plate switched.
As I tear into the OD unit the OD/Direct clutches look a little bit dark. Then I get to the roller clutch. The inner part looks discolored as if possibly from heat but everything around it looks OK. Not sure if this would have been replaced to remedy the no reverse issue previously and it was a used part that was discolored or if I need to be digging deeper to figure out what's going on.
