DT build questions

hello every one ive been reading this site for awhile now but this time ive got so many questions i figured it was better to start a thread so others like me could benefit

so here is the deal im looking into building my first pulling motor not sure what its going in dont want to pull the 7.3 out of my obs yet but im about ready to start the motor

Im looking at the international ngd (93-95) with p pump but my first question is 466 or 530 my ultimate goal is 1000-1200 hp that may not be for awhile

so wich is easier to get to that goal im guessing the 530 but wanted to make sur it wasnt more susceptible to break rods etc before i go buy a motor i want it to be as reliable as possible at this power level

i did more searching and can find much aftermarket for 530 so is the 466 a better option also we have a schoolbus graveyard near where i live so i could probably get 1 pretty cheap

i read somewhere that the stock bottom end on these can handle 1500hp dont know if thats true or not but if so what else do i need

what size turbos (want compounds)

what size p pump

are ported heads necessary?

can i get my injectors honed or do i need new ones

thanks cj

You might try giving some of the tractor pulling shops and call, such as hypermax, Riverside engines, or even a couple local to me, power parts engineering, he and his brother have light pro stock tractors, and I've seen tractors at enterprise engine performance as well.

What do you consider aftermarket that you need. Ita not really hard to find a late dt466 truck block.

the block is no problem i have a school bus graveyard near me ive read on other threads that it is esier to make 1000+hp in a p-pumped dt than a 5.9 cummins i know thats kind of apples and oranges but i read the 8.3 cummins is way bigger and the dt is about the biggest you can fit in a pickup also i can get alot of parts at pulloff.com and save a little $ plus i dont see a huge 8.3 aftermarket
secondly i think its cool to keep a navistar engine in the ford

btw thanks for the input

Are you building a truck or tractor puller? No truck pulling class will allow a DT466 or Cummins 8.3 engine...that I am aware of.

Understood... Not sure where you are from and what group you pull with but most RWYB clubs will only allow a diesel engine that was OEM in any 1 ton pickup truck. Here is a snippit from FPP RWYB rules:

It's the same amount of money and parts to get a dt466 to 1000hp as a 5.9 cummins. One is just alot bigger in size physically.

Stay 466. You will need to do some head porting, pump, injectors, camshaft, and turbo. At 1200 your at the edge of needing billet rods too.

K thanks
Read on another thread that you need injector h old downs,+head, dozer intake manifold and fire rings is that true on the ppumped ones the manifold is part of the valve cover right

Should I extrude the heads or have them hand ported

Can ing at injectors honed or new ones if so where's best

What size pump

And I want to run compounds what size turn is shoul I get

Thanks again cj

I checked into this quite a bit before I started the p-pumped 6.7 project. It was going to be way more expensive to build the DT466 and a transmission to hold it. The extra weight and length on the front end will suck as well.

I thought a 360 was only slightly bigger than a 5.9 cummins
I read your thread rona that's where I got the +head fire rings etc.

I've done quite a bit of reading on this too and the plan so far is to run an automated manual like in a semi dual clutch and I'm not sure on axles Rockwell 2.5 to probably spool out back and maybe an air locker in front
It will have air bags out of a semi front and back too so weight in front wont be a problem

I'm sure there are unforseen problems but that's the plan so far any input is great

It will be lifted slightly. And I'm not against cutting metal I'm a decent fabricator
