I think I killed my DTT 47RE

Barely has reverse, no forward, line pressure was 25 or less, mostly low single digits

I gambled and it got me.
I still don't have a trans temp wired and I hadn't checked line pressure.
I'm going to have to brush up on my nomenclature.
I don't remember what I was doing, but I pulled the "front" clutch pack apart back in early 2018 before I had the engine built for the Ford. I do remember I was going to replace the pump and it looked good. I ended up rebuilding and upgrading the clutch pack because I caught one or two of the clutches. I put a new band in it.

Anyway, it would rattle the dash on the shifts and rock your head back. On Wednesday I noticed it didn't kick the same, but had also change the throttle scaling on the anteater so that it was shifting at a different RPM vs throttle input.

I drove it this morning, normal operation. I got called in to work, and I changed the oil while I was there. I popped a pressure gauge on to the fitting, but the digital readout had a low battery. I started out from the shop and the fitting popped off the port. No big deal, it's self sealing, but I'm too big to get under the running board and put the gauge hose back on, especially with the now hot exhaust. So I throw the gauge hose in the floor board and come home. 13 miles of KY backroad, mostly 3rd gear ~2300rpm and 60mph.
I have one 90 Degree turn up a 10% grade, down a hill, and then about 1.5 miles and a stop sign. I usually push the truck some but nothing too crazy. No problems. Another stop sign, roll through it, 1/8 mile to the house and pull into the driveway.

I put the truck in park and notice what feels like a miss, the rpm and rail P are hunting. Hear an odd noise and smoke rolls out under the cab. I thought I cooked a cylinder. I jump out and open the hood, and the smoke is all at the bell housing. I get the wife to come out and Rev it so I can check for blow by. No blowby, and now no smoke. I watch it idle for another good two minutes and see nothing. Shut it off. The fan had barely run enough to blow the smoke. I decided the belt had gotten hot with the fan load. I went on about my afternoon and dusk decide I'm going to go cruise around. I decide to pull in to the grass and clip on the pressure gauge. Get that done, try to pull out of the grass in reverse and the truck won't move. I have single digits on the gauge. I shut it down and restart, and it build about 25psi and pulls out of the grass and the stops. I pull it into drive and pressure is at 3psi.

I guess I will know more in the morning when I get the pan down. Has 5000 miles on it and I haven't changed the filter yet. I was actually planning to do that tm.

Didn't you blow a trans cooler line here awhile back?

My old work truck blew a rubber trans cooler line, I shut it off as soon as I felt it. Fixed the line and a couple days later it started slipping bad. I dropped the pan and cleaned everything up and changed the filter, got another yr out of it, but wasn't the same. The trans was solid before the cooler line fail.

Filter, when was last time changed?
Now. Just got back with it.

And yes, it's dumped fluid twice in 5000 miles due to cooler lines.

Filter is plugged.

Putting it together with a new filter and fluid to see what I've got. Probably pull it and overhaul it since it had to come out over the starter/Flexplate issue anyway.

I'm a dumbass for this. I saw material on a rag when I checked the level about 3 weeks ago. I figured it was normal wear material since it was still holding fine. Guess it was too much.

Well. It moves again. 160psi in direct. Idles in gear between 120-125psi.

1-2 shuddered on the first shift and then was OK.

Shifting N-D doesn't load the engine. N-R does.

3rd seems OK, tcc doesn't slip.

For your viewing pleasure. That's about the diameter of a softball for reference. That's what I washed out of the pan with brake clean.

Im going to see about tightening the 2nd gear band. After that I guess it's time to parts shop.

Not yet. After about a 7 mile drive, it has no forward, so I'm assuming the rear clutch is gone.

Truck just arrived at the shop on a roll back. Should have trans out tonight

Got the sparklematic out.

I used this flex plate:
PRW 1835910 Xtreme Duty SFI-Rated Internal Balance 152 Teeth Steel Flexplate for Dodge Cummins 5.9L, 1988 - Current https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004L2MZLA/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_-F9IEb07F0RH1

And a car quest brand starter from advance auto parts.

I'm not sure which component was actually at fault, but I'm pretty sure more than a few fast food workers have permanent hearing loss from me starting the truck.

Flex plate was tight, but one of the bolt holes in the crank flange must have been damaged near the bottom because it damaged the end of my arp bolt, and it rolled the threads in the bore. They appear to be salvageable but it's just another kick while I'm down.

I'm going to bring the trans home tomorrow I think.

This transmission was in my 96 when I bought it in 03, and it had the newer style filter, and I'm wanting to say something else about the valve body made it appear that it had been replaced with an 00-01 model unit. Truck had 138k when I bought it. It was rebuilt in 07 with DTT billet parts, billet input and a single disk. I removed the trans from the 96 with 303k on it. So this case has at minimum 170k on it.

Where I'm going with this:
What do I need to be looking at in terms of wear on hard parts that would normally be beyond reuse at potentially 300k miles?
I'm thinking splines, bores, that kind of thing.

ATSG manual will be here tm, but I think I'm going to have to make an emergency run to northern IL before I can do a teardown. I also need to get this converter sent out and gone through. Shame it only had 5k on it.

Seal was completely out of the front clutch piston. I'm not really sure why I didn't get a Pic. I'm suspicious this is the root cause.

Otherwise, the internals look to have 300k miles on the clock.

I'm concerned that buying a core is going to have me buying a bunch of questionable parts.
I guess I could hold out for a show truck that burnt in a garage fire. ?

Yea being the newest transmission you will find is 13 years old. Does look like you need a new sunshell, and sun gear.
