Elaborate on this magnetic digital caliper.
And for my own clarification, when you "set base timing" on a pump, this is in reference to where timing is when the pin is in the pump?

Or if your like me the cheap route would be regular set of calipers, a piece of paper, a pair of scissors, and a marker are all you need.

My fingers got ahead of my brain. I meant to say magnetic digital protractor. They are slick and a really handy tool. Google them...I think you can pick them up pretty cheap.
Yes, base timing was referring to how we pin time the pumps.

Wow, Sorry Seth, didn't mean to rile them up and leave. lol
I use compressed air to find the start of injection, and then measure from my TDC mark on the damper.
A couple things to keep in mind, if you use a caliper, or anything that measures in a straight line, to get an accurate measurement, you must calculate the chord, not the circumference.
Also, not all of the factory dampers are the same size, so measure your own before calculating.
When I first read Seth talking about the 215 plungers, I was a little skeptical, so I went out and tested my 215 and he is spot on.
Seth, I know your busy, but if you get a chance, it's my understanding that the timing pins in the IP's are capable of slipping, as there is nothing actually holding them where they are. Is this true?

Compressed air is a nice touch, I was only every trained to use pressurized fuel, but never had a reason to try it.

No, that is not true. The timing hub that has the pointer on it is part of the governor weight assembly and is held in the back of the cam with a nut. If it ever comes loose, you'll know it because you will lose all governor function and control.

Well this is a good article. Gotta check my POP pressure on my injectors now. I had a strange issue where my pump pin timed and my engine at TDC (according to the cam pin anyway), I couldn't rev above 1800 RPM. Advanced the timing 5 degrees, and WHALA. Ran perfect.
