So what's acceptable oil temps when pulling hills? Its first truck I've ever had monitor oil temp and guess don't know what is too hot.

Pulled Fancy Gap hill, believe 6ish miles and a 5% grade. Water temp on truck went to 212 and never went higher. Oil temp went 222 about the time we topped hill. No alarms or buzzing so I'm guessing I didn't got above alarm temp. I had my gooseneck and 8-9k on trailer if that matter.
 
222* ain’t nothing to worry about. Anything below 260 or so wouldn’t bother me while towing a grade.
 
The 2013 to 2018 trucks run hot. I don't have any experience with the 19's and newer yet.

Engine Oil, especially when dino based, starts to break down at 240 degF.

222 degF engine oil wouldn't bother me, but I wouldn't shut the engine down at that temp either...

If you think your engine oil was hot after pulling a continuous grade at constant speed, you should try pulling a grade on a 2 lane with switch backs... ECT, EOT and trans temp will all be much higher than many think is acceptable.
 
As a rule of thumb, I figure oil temp to be about 20 degrees higher than the coolant temp.

You have nothing to worry about.
 
Thanks guys. Wasn't too afraid but always wondered. The Deere equipment I've got experience with throws most oil temp warnings at 220 so wasn't sure what Cummins/Dodge thought.
 
I wouldn't be concerned until 240-250F.

Synthetic or conventional?

Depends where the reading is taken. If you put a sensor in the pan 250-260 would be common, but after the cooler 250 is trouble.

But that being said, it's just a fake number based on coolant temp and load (assuming you don't have an aftermarket gauge)

Your truck doesn’t actually have an oil temp. sensor. It’s just an ecm calculation based on other sensor readings.
