ECM Replacement

I have an 04 Dodge 2500 Cummins with a bad ECM. Can I buy a used ECM online and install it? Do I need to flash the VIN into it to get it working? What can I do myself versus taking it to the dealer?

Some trucks will need to be flashed with correct vin. Some will not. Depends on the security of original ECM.
 
The replacement ecm must match part numbers or be a supersession of the part number. Chrysler use a few different ecm configurations in 04.
