-18 F 7.3L 300/200 COLD start.

OK We have been getting some colder days up here, So I decided to do a test. I have not posted here in a long time and I know there are some 7.3 guys here. So here goes.

First off the pickup has not been started for about one week. I did not have it plugged in. This start up is a COLD start.

What you will see in the video is I cycled the glow plugs for three wait to start
cycles. As the Title says it is -18 F below zero when I took the video. It had been right on -20 BUT by the time I got out there it had warmed up a little.

This is with 300/200 injectors, E-fuel, dual HPOPs, The tunes are my tunes.

The oil is Rotella T6 5-40. It has right at 3000 maybe a little more miles on the current oil.

I apologize for not getting any videos of the tail pipe after start up. I ran out of card space right after it started.

O take a look at the volt meter. I think it might be time for new battery's. These battery's are a little over 5 years old.

Just a look at what a "old" school engine can do with bigger injectors.

It really gets smooth after the oil gets up over 100 degrees. It purrs @190 to 200 degrees. That i think is from the fact the injectors fire from oil.

Are you referring to the pickup in your sig? Those 12v are nice engines for sure!

ON EDIT: How often are you in Williston ND?? I live about 45 miles from Williston.

OK Set up good those 12v are nice. I understand why yours is rough, The 95 years seemed to idle a little rougher then most.

No I would be North west of williston. Plentywood area. Do you ever get to grenora ND?

I have fired up my 01 7.3l unplugged in, when it was -20 before. First cycle of the glow plugs cranked slow but then kick right over. Didnt sound good but it started.

From what I have seen running the GP anything more then once just drains the batterys more.

Yes i have been told by different people that the 7.3 will not and can not start in cold weather without being plugged in. I always tell them that a 7.3 should start easy @-20 F and colder depending on the engine, IF everything is working right and the compression is good.
With factory injectors it would start @ -20f and now with the 300/200 it will start @ -20f ... But i only did to test it. I would not make a habit out of it. As a rule of thumb i like to plug it in when it get down around 10 above out. I will even do it @ 20 above just to be easy on it.

The cycle you are talking about is just the wait to start light right? I have never had a problem with doing the way i do it. In fact in the cold temps it helps it start quicker if the plugs are left on for 30 seconds before cranking.
The thing is @ these temps a lot can come into play.

But yes the longer they are on the more it will drain the Battery's. Mine are do for a change as is though.

I will have to do that. I hardly ever get to Williston any more. The place has changed so much in the last three years.

I have only done it once. Went out snowmobiling and cold front moved in while were on the other side of the mtn. came back and thought for sure we were screwed for a few hrs but nope she fired up. Sounded like 2 skeltons f$%King.

Funny thing is these injectors were smoother then my factory injectors were on that cold of a start. I mean even @ 20 above it is smoother AND it start quicker. Maybe the E-fuel and dual HPOP came into play there.

Yea they can sound BAD when they first start when it is cold. I was happy to hear that this one was so smooth.
