Driveshafts: Steel or Al.
I am at the point of ordering f/r shafts for my Ford, and am looking for opinions on driveshaft material. Local machine shop says steel will be slightly cheaper, but not by much. $5-600 for the rear, 1410 joints. 5" .125 al. or 4" .095 steel. Using 1410 slip yoke on 241DHD, Upgraded 1410 yoke on the 10.25 rear.
The truck is a VE with compounds, so nothing extreme. I like aluminum for the bling factor, sort of fits with the truck.
Has anyone met issues with aluminum driveshaft yoke caps? It'd be an expensive break if it occurred. Although I do not race or pull, just DD to work and yank a heavy trailer around every month or so.

Seen too many Duramax's annihilate aluminum drive shafts at truck pulls to make me ever want one. The usually look like a shredded toilet paper roll by the time they are done with them.

I think the aftermarket Aluminum ones spoken of here in this thread are quite a bit thicker than the factory shaft in a Duramax truck. The ones I have seen torn up pulling are very thin material.
I need to decide on a rear driveshaft for my truck too for when we do the short bed conversion. Not sure what to go with yet, but it will have to be durable for desert off road stuff...

From personal experience, Steel is hard to balance above 3k RPM depending on the length. For my truck, CCLB I put a one piece steel in and could not go above 70 MPH because the shaft was shaking too bad since that is the 3k it was able to be balanced to.
There is a guy on here, supershafts iirc, out of NY iirc, that does aluminum shafts, if I ever grenade the rebuilt two piece in mine I am going to get an aluminum one from him for sure in one piece.

Thanks guys, giving more more confidence in the al. since it will not be abused. It is a short shaft (SCLB) and the local builder said he can balance them out to 5,000rpm which is way overkill for me.

Oh my!!! What a sweetheart of a truck. Aluminum shafts sure would look nice up underneath there.
A couple years ago when I was looking, the 1410 yokes for the 10.25's were very pricey. What have you found this day and age?

Sorry for the late reply, but my truck came with the shaft in it already, so I don't know what u-joints it had as I never had to replace them. Sorry.

you'll get more performance from the AL over Stl, and more mpg with the AL over Stl.
Strength isn't an issue, as for using a factory shaft as a comparison i wouldn't do that, some factory shafts are made for mpg and having a .065, 83, 95, 100 they are still lighter than .125 wall, and believe it or not when you're looking for mpg and performance that difference in 125 vs 100 down to 65 is a gain in both, and they'll all work fine for it's intended use, however loading and unloading quickly hurts many things. .

Had to go to an alluminum driveshaft when we went to the stubby suncoast overdrive unit this past year. Nobody will make a steel shaft over 76" long iirc on the length, but they will in alluminum so we gave it a try and haven't had any issues. 5" .125 wall with 1410 pinion u joint and 1480 yoke joint I know we shaved a ton of weight by going this route. 0 issues at over 1000hp and 40psi launches.

I have a aluminum shaft in my 2.5 truck and it has about 25 hooks on it I have not had one issue with it. It has sonnex billet ends with 1480 joints and I will say it's broke the Dana 80 three times and I'm building a 2.6 truck and I'm gonna try one in it to

The 10.25 1410 yoke is around $100-150 and seems pretty common.
I'm planning on 1410 joints and a 5x.125 aluminum shaft.
Is it necessary to have the front shaft be 5" too? I know I'll need a double cardigan.

So what is the consensus for an all out race truck then? Pro street truck 4500 lbs in the 1200-1400 hp range. Regular cab short bed so length isn't really an issue.

If performance is what you're after....
Would you rather turn 90lbs or 20lbs.
Thats what you want for performance.
