Heavy Duty Cummins engine stand

Been throwing around a few idea's to build a heavy duty engine stand just for the cummins engines. I've got a couple idea's in mind. One design will allow a person to use the stand in the normal mounting style just like any gasser engine, mounting the block to the block adapter end instead of the sides of the block at the motor mount bolt holes. The other design would be more of a 2 sided rotisory which would bolt to both sides of the engine block using the motor mount bolt holes.

Here is the basic idea:

The legs and the main upright legbeing made of 2x4x1/4" steel tubing. The mounting plate will be a fixed piece to bolt to the block using 4 or 6 of the block adaptor bolt holes on the block, and a cutout to get to the back of the crank shaft and rear seal plate. The plate will be 1/2 or 3/4" thick steel plate with 3.5" spacer tubes welded and gusset to the plate at the bolt holes. The rotating pin will be of 3.5" solid round stock that goes through the mounting plate about .5-1" fully welded and gusseted. Probably will tigh the bolt spacer gussets and the rotator pin gussets together. Also on the mounting plate will be 2 arms that come around the sides of the block and extend forward to the motor mounts that will be fully adjustable to fit the different type motor mounts to help add alittle more durability. Still debating on wether to just use a 4.5" x .5" pipe for the rotator pin to pivot in, or use some industrial grade cap style bearings instead. Of course both would be gusseted aswell.

The 2 sided rotisory design would basically be 2 tradition style engine stands made on one base frame with the main uprights leaning inward some to allow more room for the wider areas of the block to clear. maybe with enough bracing they could lean inward enough for the timing case and block adaptors to clear aswell.

Just throwing this out there. If all goes well I would make these for any one who wanted one. Any interests? What do you guys thinnk of these ideas?

No need to fasten it on both sides of the block! I picked one of these up used.

However you design it, be sure to have it easily accessible with a engine hoist.

i think you are overthinking the whole engine stand thing. In my opinion you dont need any fancy arms down the side or anything. I built one that is basically just an oversized version of your usual universal stand. I used 4x4x.25 tubing for the frame, torched out some 1" plate for the head, and used 2 7/16 CRS shaft in a 2 1/2 pipe for the pivot. With it greased up it spins over no problem if you have it balanced good. You can kind of see the stand in this pic.

Hell I'm just trying to motivate myself to weld a damn flywheel and starter gear to the back of my harbor freight stand.

Our stand's head shaft turns in a pair of 1-15/16" pillow blocks with a SBC timing chain set... got a hex adapter on the crank gear for the DeWalt driver.

I know it seems like over kill, but I myself have had a few close calls with heavy things falling and would rather be safe that sorry.

I built my own. Started with a hub and spindle from a 32 spline dana 70.

The rest is all .250 wall. I welded a 5/8 nut to the plate and stick a bolt thru where the wheel stud was installed. It can be locked in 8 different positions.

Take a look at the Twister engine stands. We have one at work and impressed with how it works. They are made by K&S Steel Products out of Greensburg, IN. Phone number is 812-663-8567. There was an article about them in the January 2011 issue of Successful Farming. I am not aware of a website for them.

Those are all well and good, but what if you are like me and have a dirt floor shop? Those little casters wont roll on dirt. Well, I like to overbuild stuff and I made my own stand from scratch. I used what I had laying around, a set of axles from a Jeep, I beam and a Dana 60. The rotisserie is double reduction chain drive and has a pin to lock it in place. It has a drawbar so it can be moved with a lawnmower. The front axle has a parking break, the pinion is locked in place, and if the lockouts are locked in, it wont move. And it has the custom chrome paint wheels. I bet Dennis Perry's engine stand has smaller wheels.

Kudos for off-road capability!

I still like ours best - a modest collection of shop leftovers concocted during a few beer-storming sessions... manual/motorized 2-speed timing chain reduction gear rotisserie (no locking pin required with non-backdrive transmission) head with motorized pitch control - all part of an assembly stand that doubles as an engine test-bed complete with battery, radiator, fuel cell & control panel.

But with our small shop, my favorite part is it nests inside our shop-built 5k lb. engine crane, while our 2K lb. basic engine stand nests inside the test-bed, and our rolling 304SS teardown/assembly table nests inside of everything... I can't think of any wasted space in the shop - unless you count the square meter under my office chair!
