96' to 01' 5.9 gas swap

I'm buying a 96' 2wd 5.9 gas 2500 to swap the body onto my 2001 4wd 5.9 gas. Both trucks are auto. What issues, problems, or forks in the road will I run into? I know nothing about 2nd gen gas trucks...it's my firewood truck so help me out here.

96 was the 1st year for OBD II diagnostic system. It should be pretty straightforward project. Are you keeping all of the 01 power train ? Check to see if the part number on the underhood fuse box is the same between trucks. The body harness connectors at the rear of the LH wheelwell should be the same. Worse case, you may need to swap some engine sensors between the two trucks.

The 96' actually has less miles so I may use that engine if it runs well...but I'd like to use 01' trans for sure because it only has about 13k miles on it and seems to work well.

You will need to swap the entire wiring harness and dash. Nothing is the same between the 96 and the 01.

I was kinda thinking that but wasn't sure. Still shouldn't be too bad. Thanks for the info.

Okay so I drove the truck home today and would like to keep the 96' motor and use my 01' trans. What would I need to do to make this happen?

So from what I can find both transmissions I have should be the same (46RE) aside from the 2x4/4x4 difference. So in theory if I keep the 96' motor and use the 01' trans It should be a simple plug and play swap? I do see I will need to swap master cylinders and everything brake related under the hood. Can anyone else think of anything else to worry about?

So an engine and cab swap or? Just want to make sure of what you are actually doing before I say something wrong lol.

The gov pressure transducer & solenoid will be different between the 96 & 01 transmission.

I think the best thing to do is save the 96' engine, use the 01' trans and use the 96' cab. Whether or not this is the easiest way to do it I don't know. Thats what I would like to use ideally. I appreciate the help.

Only would need to change the electronics in the trans to cooperate with the 96 pcm.
