4240

4040's and 4240's are gutless as a N/A tractor, 4430's went to a turbo with no intercooler....so much to be had at little cost!

Not sure if its the same as a 4440....but if they're similar, watch the shaft that runs all the way from the crank to the back of the trans, it runs all the hydraulic functions and I've changed out a whole bunch of them that the pump siezed and corkscrewed the shaft, it will leave the tractor immobile....they're a real bizzatch to change too, but like stated above, they're a pretty gutless tractor with no turbo

All that shaft does, is run the charge pump for the hyd. system. The main hyd pump is driven off of the front of the engine. Charge pump sits under the rocker shaft in the rear end.

If the shaft is bad, it is best to replace the charge pump as well. If you don't, it WILL happen again much sooner than it should. Sometimes even if as a few minutes, if the pump is junk.

And yes, the 4240 will have one.

Thanks for the clarification, its been awhile since I've changed one out, but the ones I have done have been a real PITA

Like everyone else has said they are a gutless wonder. I worked for deere for a couple of years and I didn't get to see any of them come in that had to have the shaft replaced that was mentioned above. Not saying it doesn't happen, just not extremely common. They are good tractors overall I think. I would personally rather have a 4440 instead of the 4240 but you will likely pay more money for the 44 over the 42.

In the fall of 79' granddad ordered a 4040 new and waited forever for it, he gave up and bought a 7700 Ford that is a 4 cyl turbo, same HP class but burns 2/3 of the fuel, if you were pulling the 7700 super hard it would burn 5 gal/hr, if you were pulling say a single drill at 1400-1600 RPM in a high gear it would burn 2gal/hr......something to think about!
