OUCH. I worry about that, ATS is big enough that there will be parts, but I don't like the sounds of what it takes to run their stuff. I was going to call and see if I could get a refresh on the VB. However I didn't want to spend a load of money so I'm going to disassemble it myself and clean it.

Went to disassemble the valve body Last night and found so many shortcuts and shotty work that I decided to stop. Seems like there wasn't much quality control. It's going back together with this valve body, however I decided that it's going to be worth an ant eater in the long run.

ATS is out and Firepunk is IN!

Extremely impressed with how it shifts with no tuning right out of the box, beats the heck out of the ATS select shift crap.

If your a piece of farm equipment or a dodge you go back to work shortly after being repaired. Pulled two 30ft Macdon draper headers about 15 miles a piece. Also picked up the water tank trailer. Transmission is working great! Needs a little fine tuning but I'm still very impressed!

Found a good spot for the ant eater. Trying to simplify the wiring and I decided mounting the ant eater to the battery box would be my best bet.

Overall very happy how it turned out. I don't have a picture but I also mounted the little fuse housing on the side of the battery box as well. I'll take pictures in the morning.

Good to see that thing is running and pulling good. Also I couldn't help but notice from your pics it is pretty as heck out there.

It's a little piece of heaven out here. We have clean air, small town, lots of places to see. Arches, Grand Canyon, Moab. All real close.

Posted this on instagram the other day, two 12 valves in the same picture

Nice pic of Abajo in the back there, most people wouldn't know what lives back there lol. If a person likes outdoors you need to put it on your bucket list. Sweet project too! Cant wait till my 12' CR dies so I can do the same thing.

Well the 12 rail has been running great. Minor problems, transmission lines, fuel lines, etc.

I'm looking at taking this project a different direction and swapping either an Allison or a 68rfe to make this the ultimate towing beast. Also I see an engine refresh coming soon, possibly an upgrade to a newer block (for ease of sensors and mounting etc) along with 12 more valves, still undecided on that one though. However the 6 speed swap needs to happen soon! Whether it's an Allison or a 68.

My question is... is it worth the extra cost for the Allison? A 68 won't take much extra effort to install in the truck. However I've heard only a few success stories when putting 650-750hp through the 68rfe transmission.

Thoughts?

So, say a fella took off walking from your 12 valves, how long would it take to get to the top?

I guess nobody actually cares about the 12 rail anymore! Just the scenery! It would take all day to walk to the top. However if you drive it'd take an hour and a half or so.

Just stumbled across this thread and read through it, nice build.
Mine's a 04 Fummins 12 valve build with ZF6 manual so can't tell you much about the automatics.
I have read somewhere that the computer momentarily defuels the Dmax during shifts on a Allison, something about how one clutch pack is releasing while another is applying.
I read part of a thread where a guy put a Allison in his 12v race truck, but I don't think it held up as good as he thought it should, but I'm just rambling, I went manual to get away from autos after replacing 4 in my last truck and selling it with a broken trans..

This truck has had its issues with transmissions, however I blame the ATS valve body for a lot of the issues. A lot of the issues were easily fixed with 10-15$ worth of parts but it got annoying pulling the trans all the time. I finally just built a regular VB and slammed an anteater in there, nearly trouble free for several months now.

So I'm leaning a lot more towards TRADING my built 48re for a built 68rfe. Thinking that will get me where I want for a lot less investment.

In my never ending quest to refine the shifting, I sold the Ant Eater and bought an e-trans controller for the 12 rail.

Also gathering parts to add another turbski...

I’ll do a good review on it, since there is very little info out there I’ll take pictures and video and post up. Crossing my fingers that this completely solves my 2-3 problem.

For those who don’t want to sift through the Anteater thread, me including others have had a heck of a time with 2-3 shuttling bad. It will shift up then try to shift down a few seconds later. Spent way too much time trying to tune it. I’ll get it almost perfect but then I get into a situation on a grade or with a trailer and it shuttles the 2-3 again! I know it’s pretty hard on the second gear band and the direct clutch pack. I could watch on my tablet the command for 2-3 click on and off several times causing a slight hiccup that for sure was wearing on the clutch pack/ band. Finally had enough, in with the e-trans, out with the firepunk!

As a side note, the firepunk did everything else almost flawless. It’s not a bad controller, it just needs more refinement before it’s a good option for conversion trucks with a mechanical motor that only work, not race. I don’t hear any problems from the 4th gen crowd with a 48re swap. I’d say it’s more for that crowd and not for your everyday driver. Just my opinion after owning the controller for a little less than a year.

I’ve had the e-trans in for about a week. I have a version with a TPS (their regular model doesn’t have a tps) and so far so good. I haven’t gotten the shifts exactly where I want them and I’m still learning the controller. Overall a cool little unit.

I decided to stuff it in the bottom bin of the center console. Drilled some holes and ran some wires. I wanted it out of sight so it couldn’t be messed with.
