Ford 9"

Smart guy right here.....
i just think if you are going to the expense of buying everything in the axle aftermarket, why not use something more efficent with less hp loss.

its like saying you will only run a 350 chevy because they are cheap and popular when there are better things out there.

cheap and popular isn't better, just puts you at the same disadvantage as the guy you listened to using the popular stuff...

Thoughts on this?

But in a budget build cheap is popular, but I do get where you are coming from.

Im going to keep my thoughts to a dodge truck.....

We buy them and they come with either a D-60 / D-70 / D-80 or AAM

The 9" is not as strong as the automotive D-60....forget the other 3 options...

So why take $4,000 and waste it....

So lets say you got the D-60/70....get a spool, either 150 or 500

Now you got either 3850 or 3500 to spend on going faster......

Or.....you could buy the 9", put it under there....and waste $4,000.

Sure it is lighter then the d-70/80 and aam.....

But now you got 3500 to play with that will make the truck better....

You get a AL drive shaft, pick up some lost hp there.....3000 left...

A better intercooler, (not exactly sure of price) 2000 left, some propane and n2o.....big hp increase.... 800 left.....might as well add more n2o.....

So 4000 rear... or 2 stages, plus prop and a lighter shaft....

Or the nancy boy in the lot with the fancy rear getting his ass handed to him buy the truck that just backed the trailer in and looks like it wallowed in the pig pen.......

Personally...I looked at what it would take to build a 9" for my 4500lb 1/2 ton, that I'm hoping to eventually run 9's with, and I decided I'd just make more power, and stick with a D80...only mod it needs is a spool, and shorter axles after it's narrowed, and I didn't have to spend $4K+ and see if it breaks.

I'm no axle guy, I've never even set up a gearset...but I know the D80 will hold;)

People spending $4k on a 9" have more money than sense, you can get a built one that would with stand a ton of abuse for less than a grand (but you'll use some used products).

We seem to have some smart people in this thread so answer this question.
What rear do you recommend for a 4500lbs Pro Street truck running 9's?
2 options:
1. Unlimited budget
2. Limited budget, lets say $2k or less.
Full Floater for safety.
Light as possible.
3.54 ratio or less.

Whatcha Got? :)

The problem Im seeing if you want to go anything lower than a 3.54 you can almost toss Dana axles out the window, which leaves what a 9" or a 14bolt?

thats my issue, its either 3.55's and 33's (which means crap for tires) or an axle that will take 3.07's

Sorry, but I looked for prices for a bit over a year...to have a comparable axle as an 80, would cost that. I don't want an axle without full floating axles on a vehicle that heavy with my ass in the seat...it might drive into the wall, but at least all 4 wheels will still be firmly attached.

Also, no one could really tell me if it would hold up to what I was wanting.

As far as gears, get bigger tires...in my case, a 34.5/17-16 slick is enough tire that a 3.55 gear will make it go REAL fast...I'll actually be starting with a 4.10
Chris

youd have to narrow the axle to put that much tire under a lowered 2wd truck though.

id rather have 3.07's and a 29" tire

Yep...but for my truck, narrowing it was a definite, no matter what tire I picked...I just happened to find cheap wheels, and the tires to fit them were cheap too...it's win, win for me

I have talked to a few people about it and I dont think I would do one in my truck. pinion is to small

IDK if your full floating comment is about afraidw/ the 9", but if a shaft breaks the axle wont come out, its got a clap by the flange which holds the axle in case of breakage IIRC.

You going to be running those tires front and rear or is it a 2wd and just the rear? Cause youll have almost 2k in tires and tubes, if you go with all 4.

One thing I'll say to that is you never really ever hear of people breaking pinion's on 9" or dana 60's, unless you start getting in stupid high gears which in the diesel world we dont run.

You have to understand why the pinion can be smaller in diameter. It is due to the third bearing supporting it. The Dana axles rely on only two bearings, so the shaft diameter must be larger to help control deflection.

It occasionally happens, but it is rare.

Like I mentioned before, a 9" will have the best chance of living in a boot braked automatic. I understand the concern about wanting higher gears, this is an issue with the Dana stuff. You might look into the the Ford 10.25/10.5 axle as well, I believe they have gear sets available down to about 3.00.
