1986 Ford 1910

Got a 1986 Ford 1910 with the Shibaura 1.7L 3 cylinder diesel engine. I've been searching for info on this tractor/engine to see what they can handle and if it's possible to get a little more power out of them. Does anyone have any experience with them?

About the only thing I’ve found is that Shibaura and Yanmar are the two main engine suppliers of Cat, Perkins, etc. so this makes me think it’s built fairly well since those engines generally have a good reputation. I guess I’m wondering if I can turn up the pump and add a turbo to bump up the HP. It’s rated at about 32 hp at the crankshaft.

What’s your end use going to be?

We turn up most all of our mechanical tractors, but over time it definitely takes its toll on them. Engine rebuilds at 6-8k hours instead of 10k. But we use them hard, wide open blowing silage all day long, or hammer milling corn at full power for days on end.

But if you really only need that peak hp for small amounts of time, I think you’ll be fine. Especially if you keep boost and drive pressures low.

I would like a little more PTO HP and a little more gear power wouldn’t hurt either. I have a 6’ shredder that’s actually a little too large for it but it works and a little more PTO power would help it in the thick stuff. So it only has about 1650 hrs on it now and I think it would take me a really really long time to even hit the 2000hr mark. It’s not running all day, just here and there when I need it. So that’s what I was needing to hear. I’ll try to figure out how to turn the pump up a little for now and see what it does and maybe find a turbo that will work for a 1.7l down the road and then give it a little more fuel. I assume the clutchs can handle it ok?

I think your clutches will be fine, and you might be able to find a little turbo setup off a yanmar, kubota, or similar.
