The wheel doesn't grab the air, it creates an area of low pressure behind the leading edge of the main blade. The diffuser size and shape can have a large impact on the overall rise in pressure.

I think it turned out pretty good. Nice transition all the way to the edge. I checked clearance with some vaseline afterwards and it looks nice and consistent.

Next up I need to get a chunk of aluminum and make a new antisurge ring because the previous idiot took it out trying to get rid of the silencer ring.

So i finally got my setup all together enough to drive it around today. Only thing i have left is to work out the actuator. I am having high EGTs while cruising though and not sure what the cause is. During the turbo build i also swapped out my Schied 5x18 with pintle and lift mods for some used 5x16s that were built by Will before PDD came to be... cruising at 60-65 on the dash (65-70 with the 35s) i am seeing 10psi of boost and about 17psi of drive pressure. This is pretty close to what i was seeing with my WH1C but before it would sit at about 800* max and now it’s running 1000-1050*... right now i just have the nozzle closed up about 1/8” looser than the exhaust brake function with a bolt and nut i tig’d to the turbo for adjustability. i loosened it up a little bit as the boost was coming on slightly quicker than the WH1C, and now it’s about the same but i didn’t see a drop in EGTs. What are your guys’ thoughts?

Besides the high EGTs, my initial thoughts are i am going to have a lot of fun with this turbo. I haven’t taken it over 40psi because without the vanes opening, drive pressure starts to climb around there. But i can really tell that she spools quicker and once i hit 20psi and the S475 starts to spool, it’s hitting hard. It’s actually quite saddening to have to lift the pedal because it just wants to go! I don’t know if it’s the anti-surge ring i made for the HE351ve or what, but it has a pretty cool unique whistle tone as well!

Just as comparison I was running 500 loping around town at 45mph in 3rd. And 650 to 750 highway cruising. Always ran very cool on my setup. 1200 took some serious throttle to hit. Towing up a grade in the mountains almost never went over 1000. Just got mine back on the road too and still dialing it in myself. Hope you get it sorted!

I hope you are enjoying the new fuel man!

I think I found the problem this morning. I have a couple of small but decent boost leaks. So I probably am driving the turbo harder than needed to get the boost on throttle where I want, which is restricting the exhaust excessively thus raising egts; and then I am lacking in overall airflow because of the leak which will also raise the egts. I'll get these leaks at the v bands fixed and then see what happens.

Alright! EGTs are down 200 degrees overall. And i still have one little leak i wasn’t able to get to. So i guess that is good news. Next up is figuring out the actuator. I was really surprised to see that with how tight i have it set (able to build 10psi while lugging at 1200rpms in overdrive) that drive pressure stays only 7psi above boost until about 40-45psi of boost...

Glad you found your leaks. Sounds like the setup is running good so far.

Are you planning to use the exhaust brake function of the VGT?

No, not at the moment anyways. For the occasional towing that I will do where the exhaust brake might help, I don't think it is worth it. If I was going to, I would probably use something similar to the fuel shutoff pullup solenoid.

My plan is to use a short stroke 1 or 1.25 bore air cylinder, TIG some all-thread on the end of the shaft so I can run the spring in compression against the cylinder instead of extension on the lever. This will allow for greater tuneability with adjustable preload as well as easier to find adjustable spring rate options. I was even thinking I could use a small set collar and a flat washer between 2 different springs if I felt I needed to make a "dual rate" setup similar to how coilovers work.

From all the reading I have been doing, it seems like there are 2 main issues a lot of guys were having with the mechanical VGT setups...

1. The vanes ran tight down low, ok in the midrange, and opened too quickly up top. To me that sounds like a simple incorrectly selected spring rate issue. They must have used a spring that was too soft, then put a bunch of preload on it to get it to start opening where they wanted; that works fine for keeping it closed and then getting it to start opening, but then will let the vanes just fly open at an uncontrolled rate because of the softer spring rate. A stiffer spring will help in this instance.

2. Issues with turbo barking when coming off the throttle. The fix for this isn't quite as simple especially once introducing a stiffer return spring to fix problem 1. My thought is to run an inline check ball with a low opening pressure to not effect my tuning (like 20psi). And then modify that check ball with a small orifice return to really slow down the drive pressure bleed back. Similar to a boost elbow but instead of the orifice bleeding to the air it will be able to slowly backflow.

Looking good bud! Digging on the copper tubing for the intercooler, it fits the build well. Glad you got the EGT's sorted out.

BTW my truck ran awesome with your 5x.018's and some extra timing, unfortunately my head gasket decided it wasn't as happy about it as I was, . Time to port the head I guess!

How long do you think this modified HE351 would last at 900 hp?
Have you tested it for long?

So i got my actuator brackets and everything set up for the most part, I’ll grab some pictures tomorrow. I didn’t have the fittings i needed to run the drive pressure to the air cylinder yet, so i just decided to set the spring tension lighter to let the pressure from the nozzle to open it for now. I know there are a lot of guys running their mechanical setups like this, like a standard wastegate spring gate; but i worry that there wouldn’t be enough force in both directions to move the collar if it decides to get a little sticky... so i was pretty set on using this big 1-1/2” cylinder, But now i wonder if the pressure from that combined with the nozzle pressure will just be way overkill and I’m going to have to use a crazy stiff spring to tune it...

Ok. The more fun part. I got to drive this thing home tonight and holy freakin cow!! I am not regretting switching to this turbo AT ALL. Even though I’ve gone down a size in injector during this swap, the truck still has definitely gained some top end power. I can tell this turbo is breathing better, while still being able to close it down tight for quick spool up. Worth the hassle.

Some numbers.
I didn’t have time on my drive home to test too much especially since it was dark, but from the best of my ability i believe these numbers to be decently accurate.
Drive:Boost.
10:5
20:10
30:20
40:35
50:50
60:65
70:70
80:75
90:80

For just setting this thing up real quick, i am REALLY happy with how it’s looking. I did notice that if i drop the throttle real quick i get a little bit of flutter/surge, though it’s hard to hear. After i fixed my boost leaks the other day, turbo noise in the cab has probably been cut in half, i’d like to get a quality fly by video so i can really see how it sounds.

Machined the antisurge ring today. I made it adjustable so i can tune the MWE groove, i still need to do some more reading on what exactly to look for when adjusting the width... for starters can anyone measure the stock he351ve groove width for me?

Really weird thing started happening today...

I've decided to cruise up and down a long grade we have so try to log boost/drive pressures and tune the VGT a little. I have no problem from 0-60psi of boost (about 70psi of drive). So I cruise up the grade in OD and lean in on the throttle, get it to hover there at 60/70, then pushed on the throttle to go further and all of a sudden it was like I lifted off the pedal as fast as possible. Turbo surged like crazy and lost all boost. Thought I broke something bad or lost a v band clamp. Pulled over and checked everything, everything looked good and normal. Started it up and took off, boost and drive all looked normal as before. Went to the bottom of the grade again. Doing pretty much the same thing and again; woosh sound, lost of boost, and compressor surge all at the same time after I went to jump about 60-65psi of boost. Let my foot completely off the pedal, slowed down, then got back on it and everything is normal...

On the way back to the shop I did a pull down the flat stretch and it repeated the same thing! What the heck is going on?

I thought that maybe my AFC diaphragm had a leak in it that was only showing once over 60psi and the crack got out of a "fold" or something. But I put the pressure regulator on it and turned it all the way up to 90psi and no leaks... So I'm kinda at a loss unless anyone has some ideas? This is the first time this truck has done anything like this.
