Weird oil pressure issue

Fresh built 04.5 engine on start up sometime will build pressure on the gauge then drop to 0 and the check gauge light comes on. Shut the truck off and restart immediately and it builds pressure again. Normally 30-40 seconds after start up it does it but not every time. I put a mechanical gauge on it before it left and had good pressure but could not get it to do it with the mechanicalgauge on it. Anyone had this issue?

Try another used, or a new sending unit?

Mark.

No that's what I'm going to do tomorrow when he brings it back along with a mechanical gauge for a bit. I think it's either the sending unit or the Dash.

Do they act like what i described? Where they will go to zero then about 30 second late jump.back up or if you shut it off and immediately refire it jumps back up.

So just to follow up so everyone can put this in their box of stuff to look for. I swapped the oil pressure sensor with no change. Left the truck over night and put a mechanical gauge on it after sitting all night and the truck wouldn't build pressure at the filter for a good 30-40 seconds and then would jump pressure up to normal. During the 30-40 second the gauge on the dash showed pressure. So after some head scratching and i found the bypass in the filter base was weak. Swapped out for another I had here and it builds pressure immediately at start up on the mechanical gauge.

Filter wasn't the cause. The actual filter base on the engine that the filter screws on to was bad.

Seems that I recall the relief valve plunger assembly gets scored up on those.

Mark.
