"4 shut off gate - how much does it hamper flow in 4" piping.

General question on DD truck with mild mods/etc.. How much does a 4" butterfly type shut off valve hamper air flow if plumped pre turbo after air box?? If it does how about putting a 5" in a 4" inch tube line lol.. If u had the room.. ie: 4" to 5" tube with shut off valve then back to 4" to turbo..

That are can one get for example - a garret stage 2 turbo with a 5" inlet?? Normally it would be 4" would be easier to plumb.. Just asking..

Well a few simple reasons.. I am not in the oil/gas business but do know a few that are. So I can get to job/work sites have rules or in place.. But more over safety.. I don't really think I would miss with turbo port size lol.. I would consider a Kilaire valve for some $215.. It wouldn't break the bank. I was around in the wrong place at the wrong time and could have had an issue - and at this time I honestly didn't really know anything about what a shut down valve was... I was around
somewhere where petro was spilled.. Oooch..

Anyway - yes If I can/could get a good one plumbed for not a lot I would consider it.. Never know - and I plan on 500,000 miles or 750,000 miles on my truck.. So do you know where u will be in that time frame??

I have read a few that stated they noted MPG loss or some diff in performance when WOT on a DD truck.. Not on this forum and can't find the post.. Don't know how their trucks were setup.. Just trying to get educated on diff topics without others bashing
one.. It's an honest question.

Just giving ya a hard time :Cheer: but like joe said a 4in butterfly in a 4in pipe wont create to much turbulence to be noticeable and that is a great price.
 
The reason I asked is because normally oil field applications require the shutoff valve to be as close to the intake valves as possible. Most of those that I've seen are a 3" valve plumbed just before the intake horn.
 
What - Shxxxx... Really... Well on one note that would give me more room to plumb lol.. I think.. Why are all the ones I see online by the airbox..

Ok then - question on the 3" valve in line.. Seems like getting smaller could be a little diff in causing flow issues?
 
The flow drop is negligible. If it's your engine on the line, I'd rather have a very small flow drop in exchange of it not shutting down. I'd have to consult a real mechanical engineer, but I don't think you're approaching the flow stall point of 3" pipe.

Prob. not.. These have been around a long time and I will not have a real high HP/moded truck... But it would be nice to hear about data from a real objective source.. On another note - and this would help air flow for sure.. I am to plumb a spool aid as they call it.. But I am doing it just to get more air to #1 and #6 cyn for possible towing/etc.. This would make me plumb the shut down valve right after the intercooler and not at the horn lol..

Well looks like I may have to end up doing the air box side with a 4".. It's that are a really tight 3" at the intercooler.. Thats with a sppol tube, my filter setup and me relocating my APPS from the horn to below battery box.. One reason I may op for the airbox location is it's 4" and not 3"

But yes - I would like to have it by the horn..
