I have a dedicated stainless brush that I do use to clean all weld spots before I begin welding. I have tried cleaning with alcohol, but usually it doesn't make much difference IMO, it must not be very oily etc. It is 6061.

Thanks for the pointers. Going to be welding up a leaning post frame next for my brothers boat.
